so Im thinking of taking a weekend brake in Dublin over the Christmas period, flight is like £35 so that's all good and im thinking il stay at the Marriott.
what i need to know is should i hire a car?
what places should i visit?
where to go for dinner?

help is much appreciated.

You don't need a car for Dublin, public transport is pretty good (when they're not on strike).

You will however need to remortgage your house/sell your children in to slavery if you plan to drink in any of the popular bars.

Tap water for the mrs it is then. luckily I don't like Guinness so it shouldn't be to bad ?

This. Contary to popular belief that pubs/bars in Ireland are cheap, some are not & you may as well open your wallet & tell the barperson to help themselves to all of your money when it comes to paying for a round.I last visited Dublin in 2010, so I hate to think how much drink prices are now.

im thinking il stay at the Marriott.

There isn't a standard Marriott in Dublin - only a property from the Renaissance brand at £hilarious per night.

If you want a Marriott-like experience you'd have more luck with Hilton in Dublin - there are two Hilton's and a couple of Doubletree's as well. We stayed at the Hilton Dublin Kilmainham and it was absolutely fine. This was also over Christmas, about 2 years ago. Had a nice time.

Love Guinness couldn't get enough of it when i was in Dublin, love it when you hear folk go put me splash of blackcurrant in it mate :eek: really.

Definitely no car needed, Dublin is tiny - you can walk from Dublin Port in any direction within M50 to the outskirts in less than 2 hours. Everything worth seeing can be visited in one day if you fly in in the morning and fly back in the evening.

Dublin isn't that expensive as long as you don't drink in the traps.

Get yourself a Dublin pass (can be had for 15% discount with codes fairly often) as this encompasses most things you'd want to see in Dublin at a decent discount.

I personally love having a car in Dublin but thats because I usually drive out and home. :p buses are grand as are luas'.

I'm on phone but will write more bout hotels later.

P.s weather will be ****e

I've spent a lot of time in Dublin over the last few years, both for business and pleasure and love the city and people. My mum is from Ireland and I've seen a lot of changes since my first visit around 1972.

Hotels wise I would reccomend The Merrion if you want the very best in the city, The Raddison Blue if you want modern and safe from a brand and probably The Fitzwilliam for the great location smack on the corner of St Stephens Green and the main shopping area, as well as having the tram right outside the front door for going up or down the coast.

Dining wise I would suggest:

http://www.pichetrestaurant.ie/ (Contemporary cuisine, sensible money for good quality)
http://www.dax.ie/restaurant/ (Voted best in Ireland 2014 in some awards)
http://www.thegreenhouserestaurant.ie/ (Modern, Mich Star type stuff)
http://mulberrygarden.ie (Bit out of town, but great recommendations on this one)
http://pearl-brasserie.com/restaurant/ (Not eaten here, but told its good)

If you stay at or near the Fitzwilliam then Thorntons is worth a look in the hotel, think i carries 1 star. There are many other great places to eat in the city to be fair, its a great place to dine out.

Don't hire a car without a satnav - I've never been to a more poorly signposted place...and a complex one way system just makes things worse

I thought food and drink was very expensive...although I was in the centre of Dublin. When I went (2012) both were more expensive than central London

Hire car, drive to Galway, enjoy. ;)

A receipt from the well known Temple bar from earlier this year

Not everywhere in the city is expensive when to comes to drink prices though, I found a good pub with a good range of different beers etc and it was sub €4 for a pint if I remember correctly.

It is a fairly nice city, I'd recommend getting a travel pass as mentioned, jumping on one of the tour busses and back off at each spot was the way we did it. Drinking and eating in the centre is expensive as said, but I'd have a pint or three in temple bar anyway as it's pretty nice. :)

We stayed for three nights and found that to be plenty of time to see most of the attractions.
