Can someone please tell me what the fuss is about? Surely a mech keyboard is a mech keyboard is a mech keyboard? This doesn't even come with decent software

Yes a mech keyboard, is a mech keyboard, these are quite nice examples. They are tenkeyless, backlit & have n key rollover, the lack of needing drivers/software is a bonus.
