Dude?

Can I ask why it is that British people use this word? They seem to use it where 'mate' would be more appropriate for a British person.

Is it an example of the creeping Americanisation of our language?

I find it irritating and inappropriate when used by a fellow Briton

Who here uses that word, and why?

I used it when quoting from "Dude where is my car?" I believe a lot of the influence was brought over with surfing culture and that becoming more popular over here.

I use it as a greeting, and I expected response is "Sweet".

More like "alright dude" rather than "doooooooooooooooooooooooode! sweet"

Even worse is the word Rad. I had this used on me yesterday, in place of words like great, excellent etc.

There are far too many words in English that we've stolen from other languages to worry about someone saying 'Dude'.

I've used that word since i was about 6 years old and still do for some reason! I'm 24 btw so it's been around for quite some time lol! I blame Bart.

i use it reasonably frequently, usually "cheers dude"
i dont like saying mate
