Dude?

I personally use both words.

The word "mate" seems to be associated with less than reputable characters these days *cough* chavs *cough* so I use it less often.

In terms of it in use; I would use "mate" to someone who I didn't know very well but want to refer to them or talk directly to them, I use "dude" with closer friends and people who I know are sound geezers.

Originally "dude" meant a city person in the country, with strong connotations of ignorance of rural ways. The word as used in contemporary culture, typically American, may have had its origins in the Irish , and indeed, dúd in modern Irish is a derogatory term for a foolish person.

Why don't you like saying mate? :)

Mate is a British word (and adopted by other English speaking nations like Australia). Dude is a Californian word.

I just dont particularly like it, I've had too many issues with using it in the past, working on doors and the other security work I do it can get peoples back up "i'm not your mate" etc, not fussed if people call me it, i just dont like to use it, I see dude as more australian/surfer culture than american
