Dude?

My best mate and I call each other dude, don't know why, always have but then were both very americanised TV and movie wise.

Must be a foreign thing :)

It is a peculiarly Scottish thing yes, or the Proper North™ as I suppose you could call it. :p

The word "Dude" sounds ok with an american saying it, but uk\ireland it sounds retarded with our accents. Record yourself saying it and play it back..enough said.

Sounds fine to me and my accent isn't even vaguely American, you are right though that certain words don't sound quite right when said with specific accents.

I am siding with dirtydog here.

mate
chief
pal
fella
geez (er)
squire
chap

All acceptable

Dude just sounds weird coming from anybody English.

I use dude, gnarly, awesome all the time.
I'm still living 10 years younger perhaps yes, but nevertheless, dude is acceptable.

But I won't say I like americanisation, theres too many mcdonalds.
And when you work with americans, you tire easily.

As an American I have trouble saying mate and cheers. Just not compatible with me somehow :) I use dude, man, bro...and thanks instead.

Down in Cornwall it's seen as perfectly reasonable for people to call you '****'.

True story.

I fell foul of that when I was 18 and had a holiday job in a furniture factory in Frome. Everyone started calling me **** and I got slightly paranoid, until they convinced me that it wasn't the same as willy.

"My little prosthetic limb" is one of mine personal favorite. As in "how are you today my little prosthetic limb". It confuses the hell out of people. I find it best to keep people on their toes.

I wouldn't worry about the whole dude thing. Women get much worse and they are mostly very patronising. Delivery guys who call me love, hun, deary, mate or, the very worse, darling, are given very short shrift. The only thing I will accept is 'me duck' when I'm in the Midlands.

TBH, I'd settle for dude ahead of any of these and would prefer it if they would stop walking off with my pens.
:D

Coming from Northern Ireland, I avoid "mate" like the plague. In my experience, it's normally used by someone who is about to mug you or smash your face in. In NI "mate" is pretty much used only negatively/sarcastically, eg. "Listen here, MATE."

I use "Dude" instead, usually.
