Is there any version of Dune released that David Lynch approves of?

I realise that the edit made for TV aka as the extended edition? David Lynch got his name removed from the credits.

It's been years and years since I have seen Dune, just wondered if there was any version that is worth watching or are they all butchered by producers etc?

The sands of dune or whatever it was called thats a 3 part thing on netflix wasnt bad, but was poor in comparison to the film. Its also set after the film and has a really daft ending imo. Film wise though, i dont even know if another exists.

The original Dune movie was a mess, but a beautiful, gorgeous and visually stunning mess. One day i hope they remake the film into a decent trilogy but keep some of the dark aesthetic of the original. The TV series may have had a more coherent story but the sets, SFX and costume designs looked worse then a Dr Who episode

I used to love the film Dune, but I never realised what a mess it was until I read the book not that long ago. The mini TV series from around 2000 was actually pretty good, and better in my opinion, even though it was fairly low budget compared to the visual feast of the 1984 film. It had other things going for it. It did get some things wrong, but it didn't feel like a slide show of events. Both have their plus points, but ultimately, neither come close to being what such a fantastic book deserves. It will be great if someone can do it justice some day, but it's a complex story that is going to be a pretty hard sell I'd imagine.

I watched El Topo at the weekend, when it was on film 4. Shamefully this was the 1st time I had heard of Alejandro Jodorowsky. The film was so surreal and was compulsive viewing for me.

Anyway reading up on him online it turns out he had the rights to Dune before Lynch. I really could imagine this guy making a bloody fantastic Dune if he kept to the script because he has the ability to put his full imagination onto the screen.

From the same interview I thought this was a fantastic quote:

Leading on from killing Steven Spielberg, has your opinion of David Lynch's Dune changed at all?

I think David Lynch is a fantastic moviemaker. I was so ill when he made Dune. But when I went to the theatre to see it — always I tell this with great happiness, because I was so jealous — I was dying. I was grey. But then when I went to the theatre and saw the picture, I was so happy, because the picture was so bad! And then I could live again! Because if David Lynch had been able to make Dune as David Lynch, I think I would have died. But when he made a bad Dune, he saved my life. And I love David Lynch, because he saved my life. Also, I love Cronenberg, because he is an auteur, he has his obsession. I like him. He is honest. There are a lot of moviemakers I like, and there are others I hate. But what I hate the most is Spielberg. And second Walt Disney.

The 'Dune' and 'Children of Dune' miniseries were quite good.
Well acted for the most part, good cast, reasonably true script.
Some things change as they always do, but rather true to the book in most parts.

Worth a watch.

DO you mean the 'Children of Dune' miniseries?
I might be wrong, but if I recall the ending was rather similar to that of the book.
Child becomes GodEmperor.

Frank Herbert's Children of Dune

Thats the one I meant so sorry for an confusion.

The ending where he turns into a weird worm/human hybrid and just runs around the desert at daft speeds for the rest of his life. I full on didn't get that, whilst I understood most of the meanings and symbolism of the dune film

He was becoming one with the worm, the idea being, he would be worm and emperor and it would stretch his life for many generations, so he would last long enough to see his people fulfil their golden path. no change of leadership, no alteration, one goal one leader one pursuit, no challenges. After all who's going to mess with a sandworm.

that's what I recall anyway, been a long time since I read the books. He ran as he wanted to sleep, and he was in that form superhuman, so he ran and charged to tire himself, so he could sleep and forget the abomination he had submitted himself to.

Agreement from me, the David Lynch movie was a dreadful mess of screen masturbation that (for me) changed key parts that just ruined the whole thing. Don't get me started on the weirding way!

The Sci-Fi channel 3part mini series of Dune was better, lower budget and it shows but very good and truer to the books. Children of Dune had a higher budget and is very very good indeed.

The ending is the same as the books.

I wish you could easily get hold of a bluray copy of David Lynch's Dune in this country. I can only see it on dodgy unofficial looking import sites :( It's one of my favourite films.

edit: Having said that, looks like you can get it on Blockbusters site. Can anyone comment on the quality?
edit2: Also on Zavvi, who currently have a multi buy offer on David Lynch films. Bought Dune and Blue Velvet, result. Now just got to wait a couple of weeks for them to turn up.

You can get it from the jungle site. It's very good quality, far better than the DVD. There is a review of the BD release on Blu-ray.com

I have the blu ray and its great quality. I think it may be a bit different to my special edition dvd though as something felt a bit different. Like the score may have been changed or something. I always really liked this version of Dune. If the studios would have just let Lynch get on with his work then we would probably have the masterpiece that is deserving for Dune. I really liked all of the strange dark elements Lynch bought to the Dune universe.

SO did i, i think it fitted the story and world perfectly and apparently H.R.Giger did some early concept work and his influence shows despite the fact he didn't work on the film for very long

I think the work Giger did on Dune was on a previously abandoned project, its a shame because his work he created for Dune was amazing.

I think Lynch went on record saying hes never doing another big budget film again, big shame.

I read one rumour that a version of Dune was shown that was something like 6 hours long.

Probably just internet folklore.

Would love to see a new decent Dune film. I'm a big Lynch fan and love his version.

The TV miniseries was just too amateur to take seriously, I couldn't get past the obviously cardboard sets and shoddy effects.
