Though we only experienced the first hour of a pre-alpha build of the game from what we saw Obsidian seems to be doing right by the Dungeon Siege name, sticking close to the successful formula of its predecessors yet bringing it up to speed with the expectations of modern gamers.
Just been looking at the screenshots for this game although I dont think I can link them. Have to say the game looks very nice! A Contender for the Diablo 3 title maybe?
So it’s clear that the new Dungeon Siege is much more of an action game. Of course, there’s still strategy, but it’s not strategy that comes from having a huge range of interacting abilities. It’s more a matter of mana management, and learning to deal with the game’s special enemies, whose colour-coded auras affect the fight in different ways. Even fighting the regular fodder-mobs is more tactical than chaining a set of regular attacks – from the very beginning, there’s a strong element of crowd control and taking the enemy on in a way that effectively uses your current hero’s style.
There’s a lot to like about Dungeon Siege III. It’s an earnest story, told well, and it looks great in Obsidian’s beautiful new RPG-oriented Onyx engine. I don’t feel like my self-important worries about dumbing down the game have been fully addressed, but I enjoyed my playthrough on a gamepad, and there’s more than enough time to address the worrying lack of information about how the PC version will stand out. But for now, with Obsidian’s history of solid adopted sequels, it’s probably fairest to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment announce plans to release Dungeon Siege III in Europe and other PAL territories on May 27, 2011, which presumably indicates the North American edition of the action/RPG sequel will be released around that time as well. Word is: "In DUNGEON SIEGE III, players assume the role of one of four legionnaires in the crumbling kingdom of Ehb, fighting for the sake of their fallen comrades. Conflict is constant and decisions have lasting consequences, allowing players to dictate the outcome of the tale. Do battle as a lone hero or fight alongside up to three friends and, thanks to robust AI, DUNGEON SIEGE III’s co-op multiplayer mode allows players to seamlessly drop in and out of battle without interrupting the action or impacting the campaign." The announcement is accompanied by box art of both the standard and limited editions of the game.
Eurogamer: The game is multiplatform. Is the PC version different in any way?
Rich Taylor: Yeah. There are certain things that are more PC-centric. The input and the controls lean more towards the PC. On the console it controls like a console game. You control your character with the analogue stick and the camera with the other analogue stick, much like most other single-player controlled games are when they come out on the consoles.
On the PC, though, players expect to be able to click and move their character around with the mouse and click on enemies. We'll certainly have it control that way. The interfaces will be mostly the same. The stat comparison available on the console will also be there on the PC. And of course the PC lends itself to higher-resolution textures and visual presentation that we're happy to take advantage of where we can.
Hmmm is it me or does it look like co-op will only be available between 2 people? The UI seams designed for 2 players max
Eurogamer: Comparisons with Diablo III are inevitable, but are they fair?
Rich Taylor: People will find they're two completely different games. With Dungeon Siege you're going to feel like you're playing an Obsidian RPG in terms of story. You're going to meet NPCs that have quests for you. You're going to have branching dialogues. You're going to have influence with your AI-controlled companions, similar to what we've seen in our other games. So you're going to see a lot of the Obsidian-style RPG mechanics present in Dungeon Siege. It's going to feel more like that.
