duplicate cd key

You could try e-mailing Steam as they would normally contact the original owner of the CD-Key to confirm if they have sold it or not. If so, they will release it for you to register.

You can't sell steam games can you?

If the other guy registered it to his account you're stuffed, you've just bought an expensive coaster.

That's a shame that Steam can't help with this situation. I did have a problem once with a UT3 key and Steam managed to fix it with a different key, so I can't see any harm in asking them.

I purchased team fortress 2 from mm and when i tried to install it it says duplicate cd key and wont install.
Is there anything i can do to resolve it

They've either sold you it as a scam, or they've been completely unaware that the same of steam games doesn't work.

It's quite bad really when you think about it, especially if it's the retail version too, you shouldn't be restricted on what you can do with your software if you decide to sell it on.

Just checked - you paid £17 for it? It costs less than that to buy the game from Steam itself... hell, you can buy the Orange Box for £16.99. Anyway yeah, you're out of luck - ask the seller if you can return it for a refund.

Somewhere on Steam's site there was a page detailing the transfer of games between steam users, however it was a horribly long process and they could have easily withdrawn the service by now. Much easier to not buy pre-used Steam games.

Can never understand how bloody stupid the MM is on this site, not to mention the draconian rules that inhabit that area of the site.

You can't sell mobile phones but you can sell software that requires a CD key to be entered. How is that even considered to be sensible?
