DVD Drive noise/speed

I guess it's unlikely there's a solution to this, but my DVDRW (NEC) constantly spins at maximum speed when I watch a DVDs/play CDs, which is extremely loud. Is there a way to get it to run at only the lowest speed it needs to when playing a DVD for example?

I think DVDIdle can do it.

Edit: After Googling it, maybe not. I'm sure an old version was able to though...

Edit 2: Looks like Nero DriveSpeed should do it.

yep drivespeed is not notch for this, quite why DVD playing software doesn't do this automatically is beyond me though.
