Hi.
Ive got a bit of a grey question here, so i apologise to the mods and ask that they delete this thread if it breaks the rules.
Thanks.

---------------

I notice that some people who have media center PCs have their DVDs ripped to their HDDs, running through whatever frontend they choose, with DVD art, and when they select the DVD, it runs as if its from the original DVD, ie; complete with menus, extras, ect;

How are they doing this?

I know how to get a DVD on my HDD, that is not the question, my question is how do they get whatever front end, lets say the Media Center in XP/Vista, to recognise their DVDs on their HDDs, like that?

Or am i talking rubbish and all they've done is converted their DVDs to Divx or whatever and its just the film, no extras? :p

Thanks in advance all. :)

I know how I do it on Linux. I use the dd command to copy the hwole file system into an .iso file on my hard disk. Then when I want to play that disk I mount the image to the filesystem tree. As far as the OS is concerned that DVD is a physical disk in a physical drive.

I imagine on Windows you could use 3rd-party tools like Daemon Tools and some sort of .iso creating software to achieve similar effect.

I know it can be done like that, what i mean is the menus in a media center, have icons/art for each DVD, and then clicking on them loads that DVD.
How is that done? because it would be near impossible to do with disk images without a lot of scripting.
