DVD-RW + PSU problem

Hi all. Just upgraded my system and for some reason i can only have 1 DVD drive in at a time. Whenever i put both in the slave wont appear in the bios or windows (have tried multiple IDE cables), yet both appear perfectly fine when installed seperatly. Any ideas?

Also Everest saying my +12v input is 2.11V. This must be wrong as surely the system wouldnt boot that low, or this to do with my PSU having 3 rails. And when i power down the system there is a loud beep/buzz noise, dont know if this is the PSU. Could be the CPU fan as it takes about 5sec to turn itself on from cold boot, possibly a capacitor in it charging/discharging?

Just to add that the system is stable as i can play games perfectly fine for hours, played Supreme Commander happily for about 5 hours this morning. Temps are all fine, even when doing system burn in tests for 60min straight.

Thanks for the help everybody.

Just to check the obvious, how have you got the jumpers on the back of the drives set?

Everest is wrong about your rails, there is no way you could boot or use the system at that voltage. Have a check in bios or preferably using a multimeter to see what they really are. :)

Bios mearly states that the 12V is OK, no actual reading. Will do a bios update to see if this fixes the issue.

How do i use a multimeter to check the voltage, im not sure on where to put the probes: yes im a newb

Jumpers = DVD-RW master, DVD-ROM Slave. Tried the drives on both connectors on the cable incase having a slave drive on the cable master was confusing things. Didnt help.

When a drive is in slave mode, it uses part of the master controller on the primary drive. Sometimes different brands simply arnt compatible (Rare, but it happens).

You could try making the RW the slave, and the ROM the master, and see if that gets you going, or you could try using CS (Cable Select) on both drives, and then try again (can try both connectors in CS mode)

I wouldnt worry about the 12v, Everest is most likely just misreading the sensors on the motherboard. The 5 second spinup on the CPU fan is fine, the 4 pin fans are often setup not to spin unless the cpu needs cooling. During the first seconds of boot, the cpu starts well below the threshhold, and the heatsink itself takes a few seconds to heat up, at which point the fan spins up. If your room was cold enough in theory the fan would spin down again once you were in windows, and the cpu idling.. in reality that rarly happens though.

The buzz is probably an issue with the 8800GTX, it doesnt realise your powering down, and the buzz is an alarm which is supposed to only go off if you powerup without the extra power cable connected. So basically when you power off the GTX uses its last power reserves to power the buzzer.
