Hi all,

I have been given a DVD+RW disc containing vids of friends, to practice with some video-editing with.
But I’m already stuck, the programme I am going to use (Adobe Premier Pro) doesn't recognise the file type.

Folders on disc

Files within largest folder

I can watch the DVD in both a normal player (i.e. the one connected to my tele) and on the PC (through Windows Media Player). WMP shows the DVD as one but is split into various chapters.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

So the format used to record + playback to the disc isn't the same as that to edit the disc?

Anyone able to recommend particualr software? Google search has brought up all sorts - will continue to search.

I've never ripped a DVD, so can't help you with the software, I'm afraid. If you do a bit more searching, you may find software that can read/encode the DVD format directly, but I'm not sure.

Ripping your own vids is obviously fine, but obviously it is illegal if it is copyright material. Just mention it, as the mods come down hard on any talk of illegal stuff.

May also be worth asking this question in the Optical Storage & Writing section as well?

Your DVDs are made up of .VOB files , so in order that video editing software will see them the .vob files will have to converted into .avi or mpeg files .Use a DVD ripper to rip the DVD into avi's or mpeg's [.avi's will take up a lot of space on your drive]. I have abit of software that will actually read & view .vob files in order to take clips off.
I think DVDEncoder will save your DVD as an avi file and then you can import it into your video editing package. If your vids on your disk are just short videos you'll be alright , but , if there an hour or so long it'll take some time .You can break up your full converted DVD into shorts clips to work on , easier to import into vid package .

You could try Ulead DVD MovieFactory or Magix Movie Edit Pro 10 - both of these are capable of pulling in a (non copyright) DVD and allowing you to edit it

You are lucky to be able to afford Adobe Premiere Pro, not having done this before

Thanks guys, i'll give it a go this week.
So far have used DVDdecrypter to convert from .VOB to .mpg but when viewed through adobe the vid had lost quality, played fast, and jumped :|
A guy passing in the I.T. room said it would be best to connect direct to the 'handycam' recorded on.

Andre - I am able to use the uni's copy, but not being on a video/computer-course myself i'm a bit lost :)
