Yes, that's certainly possible. The best format to use is H.264 (often referred to as AVC).
I personally use AnyDVD/Nero Recode using its built-in iPod settings. In fact any DVD ripper advertising iPod compatibility should do the trick.

CX300s are good for the price. Ive had two pairs, excellent imo.
Likely to be able to be picked up cheap now the CX400s are out.
I use winavi mp4 converter to put films on my N95. Works quickly and the results are very good
I tried that. There was aa great loss in quality when I used it. Maybe I had the wrong settings. I use Videora Ipod converter
for all my converting needs.
