Hi all

Looking to get a cheap KVM to share my peripherals, headset & monitor between 2 pc's which are next to eachother

I have seen a Belkin one, which is usb, audio but vga only. Now one of the pc's has a vga port so thats fine, the monitor also has a vga port so great, except my main gaming pc only has DVI.

I was thinking is it possible for some sort of dvi-vga adaptor to bring the signal back to VGA so i could use this particular KVM? If so do i need to be concerned about quality loss? And if so is it a dual link adaptor i need?

Many thanks in advance :p

Any cheap DVI to VGA adapter will be fine. Depending on the monitor itself and perhaps the KVM switch you should see no difference in quality.

Just to say, make sure the output you're using on the PC is a DVI-I and not a DVI-D as DVI-D will not work with a cheap DVI to VGA adapter (you'd need an expensive Active adapter then).

What's the GPU you're attaching it, Xplo?

Thanks for the replys gents. Stu i have read some more into this evening, thanks for pointing me in the right direction thats what i was looking for i suppose, i was kind of on track as i vaguely remembered there being some issues concerning this kind of setup before. I have a GTX660 which has a dvi-i port, so aslong as i get a dvi-i to vga (the i pert being the important bit) i ahould be ok as dvi-i as default transmits both digital an analogue, and the card pumps out both signals so its a case of the adaptors doing the rest of the work just to translate the signal?

Yup Xplo, sounds like you've got it all sorted there mate. Every DVI-I to VGA adapter I've seen just changes the pin connections round so your GTX660 will "see" a VGA KVM/monitor attached, even though the connector you're using is a DVI connector.

I was asking as I know some GPUs have dropped support for VGA completely, even by using passive adapters - such as AMD's R9 285/290/390/Fury cards. Nvidia, by contrast, tend to be more VGA friendly still, I think.

Sounds like you're good to go, sir. :)
