dx10 vs dx9 slideshow

I only see 3 different comparisons and I feel amazingly underwhelmed...
I've already bought Vista, but the inclination to purchase a GeForce 8800/Ati r600 card has all but vanished if that's the only difference.

Atleast dx8 to dx9 was a vast difference.

Erm... the change from DX9 to DX10 is more about efficient architecture than new bells n whistles. It comes with SM4 etc.. so there will be some slight improvements. The idea being that you can do more with no frame rate loss.

I bet they will run like crap anyway, then they'll say well it's the new DX10 it takes a lot of power to run  (rolleyes not aimed at you btw :) )

Well if game developers don’t use all the advantages of DX10 of course it anit going to look better.

Anyone expecting huge visual differences will be seriously disapointed. Its an architectural change.

SM4 is the only visual change, and thats nothing major.

DX10 basically can do more of what DX9 did more efficiently.... it's not like the jump from DX8 to DX9. I would dare say that every graphical trick and illusion is and has been achievable in DX9.

DX 10 does alloweformuch greater control.. But to get spanking new and improved visual a game would have to be built around the DX10 architechture from the ground up.. Not just a conversion of a DX9 shader library.

So your unlikely to see any comparison sights showing the visual off well. Infact im not sure any games are DX10 only.. even in the pipeline so might not see full DX10 functionlity used well for another year or so.

DX10 will be more scalable and efficient. So you may see 2 images side by side, they might look pretty similar, but the DX10 Image will probably be running at a decent FPS on a DX10 Card, the same image produced in DX9 would be run at a lower fps.

Yep as we've all be saying for months on end, all Dx10 does is take the load of the CPU so you can have more objects on screen etc... without the frame hit as the GPU does the work instead, it doesn't totally change the graphics at all like a lot of ppl are imagining, odd effect like water will look better, but its nothing to write home about, its just a more efficient Dx9, a lot of ppl are going to be dissapointed imo, as they are expecting far to much, they are expecting the same game ran in Dx10 to look nothing like it does when its ran in Dx9, a totally different game, aint gona happen. :)

Its SM3.0 all over again, and what was that, oh my ******* god, look at the better water in pacific fighters, everyone was creaming over a better looking water effect. :D

Everyone was going mad for the better water, shouting form the rooftops BUY THE 6 SERIES INSTEAD OF ATI's 8 SERIES AS THEY HAVE BETTER WATER IN PACIFIC FIGHTERS!!!!, was ace. :D

Exactly. If you render the same scene with DX10 effects it will look only a little better and people will get their knickers in a twist as below. (silversurfer's e.g.)

But you can then use the newly afforded spare framerate to render additional effects and objects. Then you get a much nicer looking scene at (in theory) at a similar framerate. (Streeteh's e.g.)

So I for one am looking forward to the move to DX10.

the two images of age of conan do a much better job of showing what some games will be doing with DX10

im sorry but that isnt a very good comparison. for starters where's the draw distance on the second dx9 shot? its none existent. the lighting is nothing that hasnt been done in dx9 before, in games as old as farcry even. that comparison is more of a 'lets make the dx9 shots look worse so everybody gets excited about dx10'
