I've got a weird DirectX error, specifically something to do with the xactengine2_6.dll library.

It shows up when running Gothic 3 from Steam as well as when attempting to reinstall DirectX libraries using directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. I've tried reinstalling video drivers too.

Any idea what's causing it and how it can be fixed?

All help appreciated.

I've downloaded the DX setup file and extracted the lot, then I copied all the versions of that file into subfodlers (32bit sub folder and 64bit sub folder), I also copied the one from my 64bit Windows 7 install

What I'd do is get a ubuntu live dvd, and manually overwrite the file with the ones from mine, I'd try the one from my machine first.

-Also, make a backup of your current one..

Then rerun DX setup

Yours was a different file. (2_2 instead of 2_6)

Anyway, I used the one from x64 folder, rerun DX setup and it almost finished the installation, now throwing up the same error for xactengine3_3.dll.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out with this issue. :)

Oops, sorry about that

Did you try running the DX file that I linked to?

Extract it to say C:\DX and run dxsetup.exe

Already did what you've suggested in the previous post, extracted the installation files, copied the missing files over (there were two, one from the OP, the other in my previous post) and rerun the setup after that.

It worked wonders. :)

No idea why the files became corrupted.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: it's very possible that my overclock is unstable so I will run memtest at some point. Memory is running at the rated speed.

Now another error when launching Dragon Age Origins or GTA IV:

Uninstalled all Visual C++ entries from Control Panel, rebooted, cleaned the registry with CCleaner and reinstalled Visual C++ 2008 with Windows Update, no joy.

I think my Windows install might be corrupted for some reason.

Run memtest iso and boot from that
Download your hard drive manufacturer testing tools and burn to disc, boot from that

I'd test both of them before installing Windows again.

It's a Crucial C300 SSD.

I remember running O&O Defrag tool on my HDDs (not SSD) and it created some TRIM files on the SSD in the meantime, filling up the whole drive. I deleted them manually, could this be in any way related?

I will run Windows 7 repair before reinstalling.

Windows Memory Diagnostics tool found no errors, first pass of Memtest86+ completed, I'll do another one but I'm 99% sure it's not the memory. I've had it for months and it's been tested after I purchased it.

Reinstall it is.

EDIT: I did 4 passes of Memtest, no errors. Memory's fine.
