Dyslexia

My school just noticed that I had it as soon as I joined in year 7, so they instantly started extra help after school once a week.
Helped a lot as it was a group of us, now I forget I have it - probably lucky that I don't suffer too badly!

I was diagnosed with it and all those extra lessons in high school. It did really help with spelling but memory is awful. I am not sure it really is a problem just as someone mentioned people have different strengths and weakness's)

Exactly, if someone had sent in a request with a quote for a ultra powerful laptop for thousands, they would be asked why they need this particular model and not one that costs far less.

My housemate's dyslexic girlfriend in Uni managed to get a MacPro off them because she said doing a music course meant she needed a powerful system. The fact that her course was Music Management meant that was something of a lie.

dyslexia is reall.
the debate is over how dyslexia is described.

That I agree is one part of the debate. Many experts do also believe that it isn't real at all. Sure everyone functions differently at different skill levels. People do have varying levels of intelligence and memory too.

Offering people free computers is imo shocking and of no help to those who struggle.
As mentioned when being tested say "yes" to all the questions that make you sound 'dyslexic', and they give you more free money. It's no surprise what the result of that is.
Compulsory library visits and extra tuition should be given instead.
i asure you a dyslexic person no matter how much they read will never get up to par with there english skills.
I assure you reading real books, will help all who struggle with words, spelling and English. Dismissing that is ignorant.

Also extra time in exams is just laughable, it defies the whole point of them. If someone can't do the exam within the same constraints as everyone else, they shouldn't get the grade.

Everyone has their niche in life, for some reading/writing etc. Isn't it.

Ive never been diagnosed, but I think im mildly dyslexic. I have to be careful with my ds and bs, and I tend to miss spelling and grammer mistakes when proof reading.

I can visualise mathematics pretty well, so I can understand difficult concepts with ease, which is nice!

u miss understand what i said there. that for getting eqipment not getting assesed.

also i think the extra time is justified as dyslexics are slow at reading and writing.

Extra reading is shown to have little to no help at dyslexics reading speed. I can read perfectly fine and was encoraged (forced) to read from an early age and i was never picked up for being dyslexic by any of my english teachers and i did do higher english. The only diffrence betwenn me reading and a normal person is that my rate of reading is slower and it requires more concentration and therefore i am unable to absobe as much as the info as most of my effort is concentrated in the reading.

The main reason why i was never picked up as a dyslexic untill 2nd year uni was because i was a bright student. Aparently this is quite common for people who courses like physics and chemistry at uni to not get picked up untill uni as before then school exams and work the english skills are not tested very hard and the student can easly compensate. but at univeristy a lot of time goes into reports and they need to be of a much higher standard, and therefore the dyslexic students get picked up.

Rember dyslexia doesnt mean your crap at english, it just meens your not as good as you should be. In my dyslexic test i scored in the top 4% of the country for the verbal comprehension index, top 1% for perceptual organisation index, but in contrast was in the bottom 47% for working memory index and in the bottom 14% for processing speed index.

This means that i would have a very good understanging of english but would be slow and inacurate.

I am in no way trying to offend anyone and I do agree with extra exam time and tutoring and lecture notes beforehand but why the hell should anyone who is dyslexic get a £3000 grant?

Well I just wrote a post which took me about 20 minutes to write, so I am not posting it again as the frigging forums logged me out but you can feel free to email me questions, and I will try writing this again if you need it.

I HATE IT WHEN YOU THINK, I SHOULD COPY AND PASTE THAT BEFORE I POST IT AND THEN DONT ON THE OFF CHANCE AS NOTHING EVER GOES WRONG THEN DISCOVER THE ONE TIME IT DAMN WELL ERASES THE THING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Sorry for the caps just a bit annoyed about how long i worked on that for you.

yeh i do agree the money is hard to justify. As nowerdays if your a student you need a laptop/pc,

But anyways im not going to complain.

I ASSURE you that you don't have a bloody clue about dyslexia.
I've just come home to a 28 page report on my daughter and it had me in tears because I didn't know how bad she was.
It's pointless reading a book when what you are reading doesn't go into your memory.
People like you think dyslexia is not being able to read - far from it.
BTW, she got 14 x GCSEs and 3 A Level distinctions but you have no idea how much work she puts in.
I'll upload some images later of the report on her tests which can't be faked.
Again some posters believe you just turn up and they give you stuff - not so.

Im dyslexic and at university at Edinburgh studying chemistry. I never really knew i was dyslexic until just after Christmas this year as my school or high school never picked it up, but i had a flat mate this year who was dyslexic and he tough i was so i went in for a test at the disability office (every collage uni should have one.) I got diagnosed with dyslexia and now get extra time in exams (which is awesome 15minutes +25% of exam time), lecturers have to give me lecture notes before a lecture, i allowed to get a tutor for free to help me with essays and my dissertation. and best of all i got £2880 of the government to buy a laptop, printer and some software. I also get stickers to put on my essays so i cant get down marked for spelling and grammar.

So tell her to go to her disability office and get a test. it will take about 2 months but its well worth it.

if her uni/collage doesnt have a disability office then im afraid its a lot more complicated and expensive. you have to go get yourself tested(not sure where) and it costs £200 for the test.

wow I think i jsut kort lixdexia.. can I have my free laptop now or do I got to get a job and bi wun?

People with your attitude really, really wind me up. You are treating it like some sort of bonus - you are bragging about it.

My spelling is absolutely crap, and is matched by my poor grammer and handwriting. Now, I know that I could milk this and probably claim dyslexia, but I don't.

I'm not dyslexic - my writing skills are just crap, and will always be crap. I'm not going to try to pretend that I have some sort of disease when I don't.

It makes me want to punch people in the face when they cope just as well as everybody else, then pull out this magic card to get them extra time in exams. Just 5 minutes can make a huge amount of difference - so you can imagine how outraged I was when in my recent exams (4 essays in 3 hours - 45 minutes per essay) people were getting half an hour extra time when I have witnessed them coping perfectly normally before.

Sure, dyslexia is clearly a problem for some, that I will not deny. But if people are so flamboyant about it and treating it like it is a good thing, people like me who decide to just get on with their own weaknesses rather than exploit them are going to get irritated time and time again.

Now, I know that I could milk this and probably claim dyslexia, but I don't.

I doubt you could show you are Dyslexic when you are not. Most people who think they are are not and never receive any support from the LEA.

I understand how it can be annoying if you "believe" some people cope perfectly fine, a number of students are embaressed by there Dyslexia and wish to remain anonymous in class.

An example of this is a Note taking. During a lesson there maybe someone in there class taking notes for the student who wont sit anywhere near them. So you may think they cope fine, but they are receiving help without your knowledge because people really need it.

college should be supporting her. there are also lots of free stuff to be had if you are dyslexic, laptops, book's etc.

Why should they? I know people who have dyslexia and aren't held back at all by it, despite not having handouts from the state. The cleverest person I know is dyslexic, and it hasn't hindered him one little bit.

I would love for you to somehow have your funding cut, laptop taken away, and be made to repay all the money.

The funding varies with each person. And what you spend it on will have to go through the DDS to be checked/agreed upon.

There are some people who use there disability to try and take advantage.
Like the scrote above.
