Currently I have a single core amd 64 4000+ with 2 GB of crucial ram and an X1950 card. All running on stock.I am thinking about going dual core and want to know if there would be a considerable performance increase over the single core using a system with the E2XXX series and a decent mobo.System would be mainly used for gaming.
The idea is to build a budget system that hopefully will last a while, but with a half decent upgrade path!

Last year, i went from a 939 4000+ rig with sli'd 7800GT's to a E4300 and a single 8800GTS 320mb and it crucified the old 939 rig. Even more so when i clocked it to 3.4Ghz. The E2*** series are awesome clockers too. In fact i will have a E2180 in a couple of days to play with. You can build an excellent budget gaming rig around one of these cpu's. I have seen a E2140 clocked to 3.5Ghz. Can't remember which website it was now. They had a step by step guide and benchmarks against other cpu's too. I will see if i can find it for you.

***Edit*** Here you go. Toms hardware budget gaming rig.

I had a SD3700, oc'd a smidge faster than your 4000, and I had an x1950 pro, so pretty similar.

Swapping over to a cheap mobo and a e2180 @ 3.2 was an insane difference.
I could actually play new games at my native 1680 res, and video encoding was more than twice as fast.

It's a huge difference, and can be done for less than £200 :)

Thanks for the input guys! Can you spec me a motherboard and ram as well? I am seriously out of the loop with this dual core stuff!

This one looks pretty good, with an upgrade path from dual core to quad in the future:
MSI P35 Neo2-FR Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

I have the e2180, DS3R and GeIL ULL PC6400 (4x1GB) and this is an upgrade from a p4 system and boy is it faster by far. highly recommend this setup as budget gaming rig.

I believe u can hit 3GHz on the stock cooler but i went for a tuniq tower to keep the temps down and am very pleased (tho it was £30 on offer when i got it, bit expensive atm)

Went from a AMD 4000+ to a E2160 overclocked to 3.2Ghz. What a difference!! It's very fast. BUT, imo that only counts if you are going to overclock on of the E2xxx series. Without overclocking it is not VERY fast :) For the easiest overclock you should go for a E2200 or E2180, that is because of the higher multiplier and lower FSB (though the board can take it).

Go for it, you won't be dissapointed.

- Gigabyte P35-DS3R
- Abit IP35
- Asus P5K

Those are good boards, memory just PC6400, search for a 4-4-4-12 set, if you are going for 4GB try and get 2x2GB instead of 4x1GB because of the strain on the memory controller ;)

I'd grab an MSI P35 Neo2-FR but you cant go wrong with a Gigabyte P35-DS3R (or any of Vir's suggestions), the MSI board does tend to achieve a slightly higher fsb and is definitely more stable when overclocking quads, not that thats going to bother you at this time :)
