Hey,

Mate has a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and his little lad went to turn it on the other day and it just loads to the Samsung splash screen then stops.

I've managed to get it to boot in order to do a factory reset but it's just coming up with:

E: failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)

Bit of googling means that is a software OS issue and needs reinstalling, but so many guides with different ways of doing it.

So, A) Any chance it could be hardware and not software?

b) Any good guides for restoring the OS?

I can't flash it with a different one as its not mine and I don't want to confuse his 4 year old.

no need to worry about warranty reflashing the original firmware will not void it.

goto sammobile and download the correct samsung ROM for the device and your laughing. it really is very easy.

a quick look on XDA and here you have it

full instructions on what to do and where to download the software from. :)

one word of warning the EFS of the device is its ID code that allows it connect to the internet (via 3G) if thats buggered then the device is toast! Unfortunately there is no way of knowing if its dead until you can reboot into the OS.
