Have to reformat soon so am in the process of backing up all the nessessery bits, but have a load of mail messages to save, have googled for where they are stored but they are in .dbx format and I can't read that format, where do i go from here as will take forever to do singlarly?

Sorry, but this is wrong. .dbx files are from Outlook Express, .pst files are from Outlook. One .dbx is all the data from one of your email folders. i.e inbox.dbx.
Jay Bee, what you need to do is search your PC (hidden folders option in search must be on) for "*.dbx; *.wab" without the quotes. .wab is the Windows Address Book (your Outlook Express contacts). Back the .wab's and .dbx's up. Also fire up outlook express and go to tools > accounts, select yours and export, back this .iaf up too.
After the foremat / re-install fire up outlook express, file > import > outlook express 6 > OE file or folder store (use the .dbx's here), same but import address book (.wab here), then tools, accounts, import (*.iaf here).
Hope this helps. If you use Outlook and NOT Outlook Express, ignore the above, search the PC for a *.pst, back that up and then import it in Outlook after the re-install. A .pst has your Outlook address book, emails, mail rules and calender entries. You may need to maually backup your server settings.

Yes this would be helpful. My post above was an assumption due to the mention of .dbx's (Outlook Express' file format) but I have included some detail on Outlook.
