E2160 or E6550

The Ram clock will be limited due to the 4 banks

I have 4 512Mb sticks of Samsung 533 clocked at just under 660.

I am not going to clock much out of the Geil Memory hence the 800Mhz instead of the 667Mhz.

I am just gonna clock the hells bells out of the CPU.

edit: Oh btw, does anyone know the price of delivery if i order on Friday for a Sat Delivery?

It all depends on ambient temps..

No **** Sherlock :p

But his ambient temps would have to be near freezing point... (since they're about 20 degrees less than everyone else on the same setup)

Doesn't live in the arctic circle does he?!?

THis postclearly shows you do not have a clue what you are talking about.

So don't try and be smart.

He's right easy. The majority of 2160 users i've seen have fairly hefty temps from 3ghz up. Some with only a slight voltage increase.

My 2160 was running mid to high 60's under an ultra 120 extreme at 3ghz and 1.36v.

Nothing wrong with the heatsink either as my e6600 gets no hotter than 53 degrees C at 3.2ghz with the same setup.

Must just be great chips or temps are being taken from speedfan. :p

The temps are clearly wrong.

My 2160 was reaching 60Cplus at 3.6ghz under water.

So I'm afraid that 55c on the stock cooler is BS

I would not get 4x 512MB ram period.

I would be looking at 2x1GB 6400 sticks (most likely Crucial) as 2GB seems to be the sweet spot for many games.

However *if* I was to consider Vista 64bit, especially after SP1, then it might be reasonable to think about 4GB, especially with the increased footprint of Vista over that of XP.

If I did that then I would have 4x1GB sticks so would you think that 2x2GB sticks would be more stable / overclockable than eventually ending up with 4x1GB ones...?

True, and it isn't worth the saving imho. But the RAM clock won't limit the CPU clock, as that mobo can run the fsb faster than the ram.

Indeed its false economy.

Filling up 4 banks for the sake of a 20 quid when Vista clearly needs 4 GIG is daft IMO.

Overlocking or not.

Or even less than a tenner, if the OP got OCuk generic RAM:-

(Hope he/she is still reading)

I fell asleep :o

You guys are right. If I install Vista then its going to be a bugger when upgrading to say another 3 - 4gig of ram as all 4 banks will be filled.

I was trying to avoid the Generic Ram to cut the possibilities down of it not working on my mobo.

How about I cut the cloth and get these instead?

7 quid more gets you these

I was going to order this but due to the memory holes I opted for this instead.

If you do get the Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB), as you have noted, and if you do intend to use Vista at one point would having 4 1GB sticks compromise your overclocking / stability as opposed to getting 2x2GB ones now...?

Assuming that you would want 4GB of memory for Vista.

(sorry to repeat my question but I'm not sure if I phrased it right  )

Budget wont stretch that far at the mo :(

If the 2160 hits my expectations I will keep it and get another 2gb or ram.

if not then the missus can have it for her Sims :p and I'll get the 6750 and make do with the 2gb for the time being.

Edit: 4Gb of ram wouldnt make a lot of difference at the moment for me as I'll have xp on dual boot and use it for the video/music encoding. my Vista has been sat on my shelf for nearly 2 months now as I have been waiting patiently for this damn service pack to come out.

I take your point, regarding your budget, as I too would be in a similar position when I will be spending on my next kit.

My Vista ha also been 'sat on the shelf' as I'm quite amazed at when it is booted it consumes over 700mb just sitting there compared to the 220mb that XP's footprint takes - then again mustn't let the thread drift too much away from the OP's question :D

BTW - My Father in Laws 2160 is now sitting happy at 3Ghz and perfectly stable, great chip and great VFM.

2GB of 6400 is worth getting. It's not like it was 6 months ago, this stuff is dirt cheap!
It must have been 6 months ago when Gibbo said "Buy your RAM now as its gonna skyrocket in price soon".
2 Gig for £60 notes bargain.
