e2160 overheating

I bought an e2160 (among other things) from OCUK, just last week. I was rendering in 3ds max on several occasions, and the pc completely shut off. I eventually booted it back, and the yesterday, decided to monitor the cpu tempt as it rendered. It went above 70 degrees celsius and continued to rise and then the computer shut off again. So I am assuming it is powering down due to the cpu overheating. It is still at stock speed with the stoch hsf, and it is correctly installed. So I am starting to wonder, do you think there is a problem with my cpu?

I've read of e4300 with at least 30% overclock on stock HSF running cooler than my e2160 at stock speed.

Someting is wrong my 2160 runs at 3Gz and stays under 60 on both cores at load. Check to HSF is seated correctly again. If you remove it you will require new thermal paste. If it is seated correctly and the push pins are in the motherboard properly check the CPU to see if it is concave or convex.

Whats you case cooling like? Have you got good airflow through the case?

Use Intel TAT or Coretemp to give the difference between idle and load temps. If the Idle temps are high then it is just a warm case (poor airflow or well insulated) and therefore your heatsink/chip contact is fine.

You could always lap your e2160 to ensure better contact, or get a aftermarket heatsink and fan.

I've got one e2160 at 3GHz and it never exceeds 60, thats with an Arctic cooler Freezer 7 Pro.

I have another at slight overclock (wife's machine) and with the stock fan it's never above 50. Deffo something wrong with either your cooler or your CPU.

What temps does it do when idle at stock / loaded at stock ? What are your case temps like ?

Tried re-seating the heatsink and that appears to have been the problem. Temp has dropped substantially, though I'll keep an eye on it for a while.

Cheers for the help!
