E2180 or E2200?

Hey there

So I am buying a new CPU, but I want to know whether I should get the C2D E2180 or the E2200. The reason for me asking is I've heard the E2200's are unstable when OC'ed to around 3GHz, which is what I will be planning to aim for but the E2180's are stable even to around 3.2GHz. So which should I choose and why?

Thanks for your help and time.

I've not heard that said about the E2200 =\

I'd get the 2200 myself, only £8 more, and you start off with 200mhz more.

e2160, e2180, e2200 will all hit 3.2ghz on decent air with a decent budget mb.

The e2140 is the only one that can cause trouble due to its lower multiplier, but even then an 8 multi is still very usable with modern boards.

I would just go for the cheapest.

Well I will be using the Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H GeForce 7100 Micro-ATX mobo and Akasa AK-965 CPU cooler. Will these components be good enough for OC'ing a E2200 to about 3GHz?

The e2160, e2180 and e2200 should all hit 3GHz on that board, no more than 333FSB is needed.

Yes, they SHOULD. However, as with all cpus, its a complete lottery unless you receive a line of chips exactly similar to those of a friend who you know can overclock them to that extent.

I received an E2200 that everyone on here assured me would happily overclock to 3ghz +, however, it simply can't exceed 2.8ghz, even with a bunch of volts and a very swish arctic cooler on top.

All i'm saying is don't believe the hype. If you want a solid cpu thats guaranteed to run at 3ghz, go for an E8400.

Gotta agree there. Got a E2200 a month or so back for my sister's pc. Took over 1.4v (can't remember just how much) to get to 3Ghz and at that, the stock cooler was hitting high 60's tempwise so could go no further. Had a E2180 long before that and got that to 3.2Ghz with ease. E2200's are not necessarily the best overclocking chips.

A c2d that can’t even manage a 600mhz overclock   that is very very unlucky tbh :(

So which one would it be better to go for?

There seems to be nothing that suggests that the E2200s will clock further (infact, by all accounts, the opposite may be true) so you might as well save some cash. Newer chips don't seem to be clocking quite as well, so looking on the MM or that auction site might be wise. I picked up a new E2180 for £31 this way and it clocks to 3.24ghz with 1.3V under load.
