E30 M3

The e30 all day long, so long as you can handle LHD and are not terrified of pranging it although if you were used to anything more modern I wonder how long the novelty would actually last? - what was highly regarded as a wonderful drivers car in the mid 80's would be found severely wanting compared back to back with today's run of the mill shopping trolleys.
Progress I think it's called.

Not the 240 hp ones...
The thing about a e30 M3 which is not so true of any of the ones that followed except perhaps the csl, is that its basically a car you could buy and take to a race right of the shelf and cane the **** out of it.
Which is epic in my book.

Only M3 i want more is the e90 CRT

To compare it to a 320d is frankly preposterous

Well obviously, but it was in the context of pace. The stock car isn't that fast. That doesn't take anything away from it, its just a fact.

Its faster than a 320 d though :)

If the e30 wants to be obviously
That may of changed with the f30 however?

As sad as the situation is the person who wants the car is quite adamant he wants an E30 M3 even though has no experience or much prior knowledge of said car, he just knows he wants one and is willing to part with a sizeable amount of cash should a suitable one come up for sale.

Personally I would absolutely love to drive one and whilst I agree that it's not going to be fast and will certainly be beaten for speed by something more modern and far for mundane, it's not really the point is it :D

You can lol all you like but that's the reality of the market for them now :P

Let's see how many 80k offers he gets.

Performance wise an s15 or s14 with some money thrown at then will probably outperform the m3. But that's neither here nor there. They clearly enjoy a cult status but I think it's gotten out of hand!

Why even make the comparison then? An S14 will be quicker with very little money thrown at it. Will it handle quite as well? Probably not and it sure as hell won't sound as nice, SR20's sound awful imo :D

Back to the point though, having a quick look on car and classic last night does indeed show one that is in excess of the mentioned 80k here but then again they come all the way down to just 40k (here) safe in the knowledge Jay Kay has ragged it around for you in his previous/current ownership!

This thread reminded me of this series of videos.

watching some of these video's

why is he always so surprised when the more modern car wins. he's racing 30year old cars.

I understand the point is to show that these once time "hero" cars were top of the range and are now rivalled by modern normal cars. but he's just so annoying.

some people dont seem to understand the term "classic car"

You can get a 800hp skyline for half the price of a gtr. And?

A drag race is quick and easy to do but hardly a good indicator for which is a quicker car because meaningfully car speeds are generally compared around a track. Ideally they would refresh the suspension, full service etc and take them round a track a few times until the 'Stig' figure is happy they've done a good lap.

That Jay Kay car has been on the market for some time, at least a year and probably closer to two. I remember seeing it some time ago. Given that it hasn't sold and I'm sure Jay Kay has the money to maintain it property I would say the market for high value E30 M3's is quite small, unless one of the special editions maybe. The Jay Kay car has probably be maintained with no expense spared.

They are fantastic cars. Aging now yes, slow in a straight line compared to new cars but it's all about the complete package. When the E46 M3 came out I remember the E30's giving them a run for their money at track events (providing straight not too long ). But, at the lower end of the market there will be a lot of rubbish about. They do rust too, and the rust can be well hidden (outer panels look good, bulkhead can be rotten for example).

I've had a few in my time and thoroughly enjoyed them. One was bought with just 38k miles on it and one previous owner. 2nd was a rare UK spec Evo 2, which later went through restoration (rust!).

As they are old cars now, and quite expensive I would only buy one that has been completely restored and there are a few about now, or look for imports from warmer climates that have been used as summer cars only and definately get fully inspected by a specialist- there might some expensive hidden nasties. A lower risk alternative could be a 320iS. Made for the Italian and Portugese markets only with the same S14 engine but smaller displacement (2litre) but apparently is a very sweet engine. It has the std E30 body however. But if imported recently shouldnt have the rust issues.
