Clutch has gone on our beloved e39, and want some idea of the costs of replacing it? And also thoughts on buying one from a scrappy and using it to replace the worn out one, the car has done 165k so the clutch lasted a good while

If you are going to the trouble of changing the clutch (not actually that impossible a job DIY), then I wouldn't bother replacing it with an unknown from a scrappie.

Don't get one from a scrapyard, total waste of time. As for cost, i'd expect £250/£300 from an indie garage...
:)

i might be talking tosh, but wouldnt a E39 clutch be reasonably easy to do compared to a FWD car, a little bit more space to work in etc?

There isn't a lot of space, but you "can" drop the box and prop without needing to move the engine. I wouldn't call it easier though.

Oh thats quite good, and people say its expensive when it goes wrong.
Had the car since 2 years old, put many many miles on the clock got it up to 160k miles and this is the first major part needing changing
