hi, im going to be buying a new mobo, cpu, ram, psu and heatsync.

the specs will be

E4300 1.86ghz (to be overclokced to 2ghz per core at first) £75

Kingston 2GB (2x1GB Kit) DDR2 533MHz/PC2-4200 Non-ECC CL4 £50

ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA PT880 Ultra Socket 775 SATA 8 channel audio ATX £40
i went with this mobo because i cant afford a new graphics card atm and will want pci-e when i can, also i dont want to upgrade any drives and most of the new mobos only have 1 ide connector.

Enermax Liberty 400W Modular ATX2.2 PSU £47

Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Socket 775 CPU Cooler £17

reused parts:
1 samsung 80gb harddrive [OS] (IDE)
1 wd 80gb harddrive [Files] (IDE)
1 dvd reader (IDE)
1 dvd burner (IDE)
ati radeon 9600 (AGP)
2 12" cold cathodes
2 Antec TriCool 80mm Blue LED FAN
1 bog standard fan :P

what i realy want to know is:

1) will the mobo allow me to overclock to atleast 2ghz per core
2) will the psu be able to power all of this
3) will the cooler i have added be better than stock or will it be a waste of £17?

Thanks, if you have any sujjestions i have a total of £170 for the upgrade

If I were you in this situation, I would save your money then buy a new pc when you can afford to not bottleneck your system horribly. With all the OLD hardware with the new CPU which will be waiting hours before the system is ready to pass it data.

2) Yes, but that cpu goes to 3GHz with that cooler with ease.

3) I think so.

1) Almost certainly.

2) will the psu be able to power all of this
3) will the cooler i have added be better than stock or will it be a waste of £17?

well i want to buy the stuff i have posted as soon as i get the money, or i will just spend it on crap, and believe me i can spend a lot of money on crap.

also im running a athlon x2200 with 512mb ram and i want to be able to do more processor hungry things.

encoding a dvd with nero vision can take up to 5 hours with this rig :S

im not a person who wants the very best components around, and i feel after 3 years i should give my amd a rest and just use it as a file server or family pc.

also i will be getting some artic silver.

oh and P.S. thanks for replying fast and not being all " oh thats crap go away you noob."

The Artic comes with the thermal paste already on applied, you don't need to buy any. :)

Slightly edited my first reply there. There PSU will be able to handle it, i think. I wouldn't quote me on that though.

E4300 will go to 3GHz easy :)

I would go for the Geil 2Gb PC5300 for only £2 more, apparantly overclocks well and has a nice silver heatsink.

i would, but the place im getting it from gives me £10 off of every order over £30 if i use google as my payment method.

(well i do believe its off every order, as it is on another site i use)

if it isnt i will get 1 gb of the geil ram :P.

as said in original post about £160 -£170 for cpu, mobo, ram, psu, and heatsink.

i know the above comes to £220 but i will get a total of £40 discount if i do seperate orders.

and plus i rounded most of the parts up.

If I were you, I would get a good mobo like the DS3p and, a pentium d (for now) a 7300gt, some good ram and then upgrade the processor when the penryns are cheap and get a better graphics card when the next gen ones settle down in price.

FWIW that MOBO sould be regarded as a stopgap - a stepping stone between the DDR/AGP system and the DDRII/PCIe one.

With your modest ambitions for overclock (the MOBO will struggle to get above 300 fsb anyway) I would save the money you are intending to spend on your cooler and get a beefier power supply. Reason for this is that you may need it when you make the change to PCIe graphics, and as things stand you are proposing purchasing both a MOBO and PSU that you may be outgrowing in the not too distant future. The stock cooler will see you to your overclock and well beyond.

i was thinkink of getting a pentium d the 820.

will the ds3 have the required ports (i.e. 2x ide)

thanks for your help in guiding a person who knows not much about current hardware.

i will take a look at how much a pentium d and ds will cost.

im not too bothered about outgrowing the spec as my current rig was outgrown about 2.5years ago.

also it wouldnt hurt to buy upgrades as with the friends i have i seem to be on call 24/7 and having spare parts would be a good help. (plus i can overcharge them :P)

i also hope to have a job in about 3-6months so i will be able to purchase more extravagent components.

i looked at getting a pentium d 820 +1gb ram + the mobo i quoted + 7300 LE + 500watt power supply. that came to a total of £199 with £50 discount.

i will have to ponder over this for a while. it may lead me to wait for another few weeks.

I would just like to say that i am taking all of the sujjestions in and im not ignoring any of the advice i have recieved, i am just trying to get the best components i can afford for the time beeing.
