E4300 won't clock, what cpu next?

Thanks for all the replies, didn't get a chance to look at the thread last night (got lost in Liberty City ) and when I look today there's loads of responses :)

I've been thinking about the changes that happened when I upgraded to vista and the only bits of hardware I changed were the hard drive and I added some more ram. Makes me wonder now if my board can't cope with 4 x 1gb of ram and an overclock....

It's either that or I dislodged something (like the heatsink) - I'll have to check it tonight. I'll have a look at updating the Bios too, but running vista shouldn't have any effect on that should it?

Thanks again for all the tips, any more things to check?

ram can be dodgy sometimes, my system wouldn't even boot with four 1Gb modules in it, until i flashed bios, try removing one of your ram modules and see if it can be overclocked again

I'll try removing the newer ram first, them flash the bios, then overclock again. If it works I'll replace the ram and see if that's causing the problems. I'll check the fan etc is properly in place at the same time.

This could be the cheapest upgrade yet!! (or I'm going to blow £120 if it doesn't work lol)

might not have to replace the memory, my board gigabyte P35-DS3R wouldn't boot period with four modules in, until i flashed to latest BIOS which i think fixed the issue, and now it boots fine with the exact same four modules

Tried a couple of things so far and running 3dmark06 shows all four memory slots are full, but only 3072mb in use..... tried removing the newer bits, but the marks stay about the same. So it seems the board is having problems seeing all four, but it's not harming the results / performance. Details here http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=6742570

Slightly embarrassed here, but I've never flashed my bios before. I assume that I burn the file to a cd (unzipped), set that as priority boot in the bios then restart. I haven't got a floppy... (insert floppy joke here....)

Cleaned a bit more dust out too... damn these wooden floors

Ben, what happened in the end? Did you get a new mobo/cpu or did you get your e4300 to overclock?

I'm in the same quandry, e4300 + 965 DS3, wondering if I can upgrade the CPU to something worthwile and see any benefits.
