E4500CPU+MSI 1G OC GTX 460 Worst combo ever

I've looked into the link which was given by one of the members, however it is quite difficult and in result i may reck my CPU, which i do not want. As i want to use this CPU for at least few more years.

EVERYTHING you will do will be faster, not just games. It is also relatively safe.

It is not difficult to do. Get past the idea it's hard.. it's stupidly easy to achieve. Honest.

The only two things you really need for overclocking is knowing the maximum voltage you ship is rated at (core revision, not the name) and the maximum temperate it will run at.

The higher the voltage the higher the temperature. You can reduce the latter with a better cooler typically making the former the limitation*; however, and this cannot ever be stressed enough, the motherboard you use will determine how easy, and how high you can clock for components.

Modern chip throttle themselves to prevent damage at dangerour temperatures, so long as you don't overvlote it will be fine. If you do, well, you said you needed a new cpu :)

I've been running my 1.8Ghz chip between 2.74Ghz and 3.2ghz for AT LEAST 3.5 years.

The only issue here is you not wanting to overclock. Think about it, you just came and posted on a forum entitled Overclockers UK Forum.

Taking you at face value. Yes BC2 will suck with that chip as standard, but don't blame that on a bad combo, you didn't read the box well enough :p Buy a new chip etc if you wish, but we are suggesting you save your cash for now and overclock.

I actually have a very crappy motherboard, and i don't it has the capabilities of overclocking. I've been on the BIOS and i couldn't change any of the settings of the CPU. I'm assuming it's locked.

What's the make and model of A) your pc B) your motherboard ?

Have you bought something like a dell?

:D

guys i was new at overclocking as well before joining here.
i have since learned a lot but from reading threads.

that guide in the stickies is very scary for newbies. that is probably why he doesn't want to overclock.

i know its aimed at most cpu's, but could someone do something a bit easier to understand.

i was just reading big waynes posts here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18191437&page=2
and i understood more from that, then in the sticky. (albeit about a different cpu)

Yes, It's actually made by Compaq, however I have upgraded the parts such as GPU, PSU, and RAM DIM slots. And also a NVIDIA 334 case.

Just for your concern, if you're wondering what model number my PC is. It's called "Compaq Presario 5249UK".

As I mentioned before, I think that my motherboard does not have the capabilities to overclock a CPU. But, thats just an opinion.

Thanks for all the suggestions by the way. I've been thinking about getting a new CPU and motherboard anyway, but wanted to see if there was any possible way to increase the power of my CPU.

Since you have changed everything else, you might as well pick up a new 775 motherboard. I reckon you could get a good bargain second hand. Then you will be able to overclock your CPU, or pop in a Q6600 and overclock that one.

You wont be able to do much if anything at all with a proprietary motherboard.

Bah, gutted for you :(

Thoughts are... your only real option really is to get a faster processor then. That sucks. Hmm.. best find out the best CPU that system can support. I would try and go for a 2nd hand e6xxx model, and try to get at least 2.8Ghz model.

Be careful about just buying a new motherboard etc... it may not fit in the case from what I've been reading, so once you've bought all that gear, you might find that you need a new case, and a power supply...

Two things I can add to this:

1. When I overclcocked my quad core from 3 to 3.7 it hugely improved my performance in BFBC2, that game is very cpu dependant.

2. I recently read an article that (obviously its oversimplified) but as it stands 3.6ghz is enough speed neccessary to lift any bottleneck and put more empahsis on the gpu..
(The more cores the better however)

Well, I've got a dual core. And and I previously mentioned that my motherboard may not have the capabilities to overclock the CPU. However i have already tried overclocking my GPU and i have got a very good performance out of many benchmarks, But not from Bc2.

you'd rather spend out on all that new kit than just spend 10mins reading a document and fiddling a bit in your bios?

I've checked my BIOS and there was no sort of settings which they mentioned in the tutorial to overclock. I think my board is is not capable.

This is quite unfortunate. Sounds like you have paired the GTX460 with quite a low end system...

Was your system pre-built when you bought it? And do you think you can find the brand and model of your current motherboard?

He might be able to overclock with 'setFSB' software, but no guarantee his clock generator is supported.

I would suspect the rest of the system (RAM/PSU) is budget as well :(

Upgrading the CPU on that board / cooling will be pointless.
The main reason why E6xxx series were any good was because they OCed well, there is no point buying one to run it at stock speeds just for 600mhz speed bump.

It would probably cost him around the same cash to swap it out for AM3 setup, you can have one with a nice tri-core now for just over 100quid.

AM2+ or AM3 board, best 2nd hand for around 30-35quid, athlon II x3 50-60 quid. He can keep the memory for now as well if he gets AM2+ mobo with DDR2 support ( might be worth getting one with both DDR2 and DDR3 slots ). After selling his current CPU/Mobo it should cost me no more than 30-50 to do this.

My best bet is to just wait until Christmas and see the offers for a good deal on motherboard and CPU bundle, in overclockers store. But until then i'm going to have to stick with this one :(

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Really appreciate it :)

Be careful, you want to make sure that the case can support standard size motherboards (there are a few standard: mATX/ATX/Flex etc.. check them out first)

Yeah, I'm getting a MSI P55-GD65 iP55 Socket 1156 Gigabit Lan 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard, Intel i5 760 2.8GHz Socket 1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor, and Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit. Which all should be very good performance towards my 460. I've gotten a brand new NVIDIA 334 case.

Overclockers will supply overclocked bundles if you would prefer not to do it yourself. The bundle you have chosen is very nice btw and will fly in BC2
