E46 M3 or something else?

I have also always had a soft spot for the Z4. However, I met a guy who went from an e46 to a Z4M Coupe to an e92 M3 to and X6 35d.

His views on it were that the e46 M3 was the best to live with on the basis that:

- The ride quality of the Z4 was significantly worse than the e46 M3, and was particuarly unsettled on broken roads. He was also unimpressed with the level of practicality.

- The e92 used way too much fuel - he dropped from 28mpg in the e46 to 23mpg in the e92 (although he also did 40,000 miles a year).

In the thought that this next car would be more or less a 'winter car' i'd stay away from RWD, as fun as it is, sometimes it can be a real pain. An evo X 320/40 would be what i'd consider. not only AWD but you should get 25+ mpg.

Yea, buy the Mazda.

Already placed the deposit, delivery in 2 weeks ;)

It's not so much the RWD in the Z3, it's the lack of traction control, large rear tyres, and no weight over the real axle.

I concur the lack of traction being the killer here, my e39 will go nowhere on snow with the T/C turned off, it will happily go uphill on snow with it on albeit slowly with lots of winking from the T/C light.

Have you driven an E46 M3 yet? I would imagine you would be rather disapointed after owning an M coupe. Dont get me wrong, they are gerat cars, but the M coupe is a really special car handling wise.

If it was me id hang onto the clio for another 6 months or so then put your 12k into an e92 335d

As epic as the x35d undoubtedly is for what it is - an oil burner - I'm at a loss as to why people deem them in the same league ,prospective purchase wise, as an M3

I don't believe m3ben was putting the two in the same league at all, but I think the x35d would make a great choice when the op already has the MCoupe for thrills etc.

ps I wouldn't bother with the M3 either.

Perhaps I've grown tired of the Z, but I don't think I'll ever sell, not only for the view of it from the rear, personally I don't think there are many better looking cars from that angle.
Totally agree. Ok, so my 3.0's only got half the number of pipes, but it looks fantastic.

A 335i might be a sensible option?

Your right, their not in the same league, but as the OP already has the M coupe something like a 335d would be perfect as a daily runner. Decent mpg, pretty cheap to run and their pretty nippy once mapped!

I quite agree, but the OP does not seem to be pointing toward such a car in his OP, well, not to my mind anyway....

Grown up, classy coupes with a decent turn of pace? If running costs don't put you off, how about a CL500. Just don't chuck it too hard into a corner as its no sports car.

Kiwi interior which is suprisingly nice!

That was brave! How utterly hideous. At least it's different I suppose.
