Stupid question, what happens if they phail?

They get sucked into the engine and total it.

Usually at a cost of 11,000 for a new engine.

Is this not covered by a recall or anything if it's such a common problem.

No, BMW denies the problem.

There have been case when they will pay for a replacement engine but the owner covers the labour charge if the car has a full BMW service history.

The process can take months as every case is looked at individually.
