E6300 or E5300?

indeed! :)

If starting from scratch with a limited budget you really should look at AMD goodies! :p
Really?

Last time I looked at this forum was about a year ago; at that time the advise for new builds was Intel all the way :)

So are AMD once again offering better bang for buck for new builds?

Yes AMD have ownage over the bang-for-buck arena with their new Athlon II products! :)

Could all change if Intel drop the prices on the older LGA775 platform but they seem to be resisiting that!

The real incentive about the AM2+/AM3 platform is that the chipsets/motherboards can be had for a very good price, no reason why the savvy shopper couldn't snag a good processor and motherboard for under £100 . .

I'm not talking budget chipsets either, something like the AMD 785G is full fat most good features one would want, good IGP with HDMI/DVI/VGA outputs, PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot for beefy gamers GPU, RAID 0/1/10, eSata etc etc

There is still plenty of life left in the LGA775 platform but personally I've done that to death and I wouldn't recommend it now to anyone *if* buying new . . . . if you can pickup some used LGA775 goodies that will also get you a nice tasty budget system!

Under £100? Now you're talking my kind of language ;)

What are you calling a good processor, at that price range? Is it still worth considering a dual-core CPU these days?

Well I have the E6300 installed in my Gigabyte EP45-DS3P and after taking teh memory of auto and setting it manually I have set my E6300 at 10x400 as can be seen below a pretty rough overclock, but my first time reaching 4Ghz.

initialsettings.jpg

Not tested for stability yet, set my memory at 400Mhz with an FSB;DRAM of 1.1 and 5/5/5/18/42

CPU is at 10x400.0Mhz core temps without load are 39/36

Edit, the all important Windows 7 index score

6.9
7.0
6.8
6.8
5.9

This is in a Media case with a AC Freezer 7 Pro, which became more audible when the oC was set at 4Ghz instead of 3Ghz.

Pretty good initial result with a £63 CPU and B Grade motherboard for £50 :D

What RAM do you have sastusbulbas?

Hi big Wayne,

I am running Corsair XMS PC6400C5 2x2Gb the basic XMS stuff 2x2gb sticks will probably be working on that rig later so could get the model number. It did seem not too happy over 450Mhz but that may have been my lack of knowledge?

I did think the main set backs would be my memory, cooling, case and fine tweaking the overclock voltages and stuff. May take that system out of the Silverstone LC13 case and stick it in my budget but cooler running Gigabyte case.

Was wondering if 4Gb Corsair Dominator GT 8500 would give me more headroom, after all its red too !!!

another thing to possibly consider is that the 6300 has virtulization whereas not all of the 5300's do.

What FSB can u achieve as I'm looking at a GA-EP45-UD3LR, heard it can do 500FSB. Only need about 450FSB for my q9550 to reach 3.8Ghz.

Thats one of the things that is recommended to be turned off if overclocking, what programs does it help with?
Virtualisation programs :p

MS Virtual PC
VMWare
VirtualBox
QEmu
etc

You *need* CPU supported virtualisation to run 64-bit virtual machines.

I didn't know you could turn on-chip virtualisation extensions off, and I'm not sure how it would help.
