Hi, recently posted a thread regarding my E6400 OC ability, now i am using it with a Gigabyte GA-P35-Ds3 mobo and a AC Pro7 Freezer. I have taken it to 3.1GHz and the temps are measuring at up to 70 in some apps e.g. Coretemp or Speedfan, now this is very erratic, i.e. jumping from 36C to - up to 60+ :(

Now is this normal as the BIOS is recognising 36C on average, or have i done something wrong?

Please help, i would like this sorted a.s.a.p

Ta guys...

I have the exact setup you have, and my E6400 ran perfectly well at 3.2Ghz (400x8) under the F7pro at temps no higher than 50...

My mobo is starting to die, so im back to standard clocks atm.

But under that cooler at that speed it definately should not be 70C+

EDIT: I learnt to read..... i have the 965P not the P35, but still should be fine... try resitting the cooler or checking the thermal paste

Well, i now have it at 375 * 8 (3GHz)

Coretemp reports at around 60C under load now using prime95, speedfan reports no temp higher than 45C. I don't know which temps which in speedfan  lol.

Seems to be stable when i had it at 3.1GHz, just the temps that are concerning, but i'm new to OC'ing so i wouldn't really know what's standard and what isn't??

I checked the cooler which appears to be seated fine!

I'd ideally like to get my CPU up to 3.2GHz, just concerend by temps :S

I think you need to add 15c to speed fan (not sure if this has changed) but personaly
I would trust Core temp.

Rob

Coretemp gives me 70C with the 3GHz OC :S

Does disabling all the Speedstepping and thermal things in the BIOS affect temp at all?

Btw, how come the BIOS will say 36-40C for CPU temp, and after two seconds (literally) of running orthos Coretemp says 70C ??

EDIT: I get 45C idle! Is this bad?

P.P.SI have heard that the thermal compound preloaded on the AC Freezer 7Pro will get better in time, is this true also?

What Voltages you run at?

loading the cpu to 100% and the temps will shoot up almost instantly, that's why you are getting massive jumps.

Take coretemps temperatures, not speedfan, speedfan needs to be setup cprrectly. 70°c does seem a little high, especially for that clock and cooler, what voltage are you putting through the cpu?

Well i've just had a play, and took decided to leave the CPU Voltage at default (1.32) which allows me to get up to 3.1GHz, it now hits 65C full load on orthos (measured from Coretemp)

Is this good?

I would be unhappy to get 65C with a 3.ghz run. I would be tempted to remount the heatsink and make sure it is making good contact.

It may be that the reason it is high is due to the airflow in your case. Could you please remove the side panel and run Orthos again and see if your temps are lower. This would confirm poor airflow / lack of airflow.

I would expect that to run at no more than 50C (ish) at 3Ghz.

I have had the side panel off my machine and it runs at a bout 1 or 2C lower. I might try re-seating the heatsink though, can you tell me, if i reseat it, would/should i reapply new thermal paste?

AS the stuff came pre-applied and i don't have any more at the moment.

Hey, researed the heatsink today, still hits 65C, takes longer to get there, but it does :(

Any ideas anyone?

When you reseated the heatsink did you remove and clean away all the old thermal gunk and apply a small amount of your favourite compound? Also did you make sure that the pushpins are clicked into place?

If you have tried the above then maybe you have a concave or convex CPU or heatsink meaning that it does not sit as snugly as it should. Only solution to this is lapping but that may be a step too far.

If the above is true then you could try mounting a bigger fan with more CFM blowing through the heatsink from another angle, this may shave a few more C off.

At 3Ghz(ish) and 65C under maximum full load I would think that this would be fine for 24/7 use. Download CPUID Hardware monitor and run it while you game, this will show all your current temps and the maximums you have reached. If this shows decent temps then leave it where it is. (Or you could try dropping Vcore until it is unstable to find the lowest you can put through it)

Sorry for the ramble, hope it makes sense? :)

I have the same CPU but with a 965P DS4 and mines is the same, i had mine at 3.2ghz and at load it was 62c which is worrying, so im goign to lap my cpu and ac pro 7 tommorow, it shouldnt be this hgh since i have 5 fans in the case, i think my ac pro 7 maybe isnt resting flat on the cpu

Yeah, im gonna wait now and get a Q9450 and just leave it on stock, maybe with a view to upgrading later, just don't wanna do anything else, as i know it's all fitted correctly blah blah.......

....thanks for the help thoguh :)....
