E6400 or E6600?

Should I go for the e6400 or e6600 as the better overclocker, I know the 6400 has a 4mb cache as the only difference other than benchmark speed, how much difference does this make?

I thought the 6600 would clock higher than the 6400?

If I opt for the slower processor do I still go for the Gigabyte DS3 MoBo?

I want the max I can get from the Chip so that I can happily run my machine without crashes for a longtime to come.

6600 should* overclock further than the 6400 but not always the case, just depends how lucky u get.

Also the 6600 should be used with the DS4 rather than the DS3 which works best with 6400/6300's.

Have fun overclocking.

If you have the cash go for the E6600. If not then save a bundle and get the E6300 and the DS3. No point getting the E6400 as the E6300 will overclock just as high as it anyway.

well i went for the 6400 over the 6600, decided to save myself 50 quid as i mainly use my pc for games n the extra cache doesnt really make much difference in this department

Save your money and get a 6300 and DS3/4 and you will be more than happy....have had both E6600 and now E6300 and very happy....if you got money to simply waste then just waste it....cause that's all you'll be doing!.

Guys that's not a definitive answer!

I can't stretch to a ds4, so would I get 3.5/3.6 ghz from a 6300 in a DS3 or should I just stick to the 6600 in that MoBo.

I'm a bit lost as to what I should do.

Go for the cheaper one then if you do kill it overclocking its not so much money to lose... and its bigger performance gains for the money spent... unless your going for 4+gig then the CPU multi difference shouldn't be that important and you won't notice the difference cache wise in gaming once you get the core above 2.6gig or so.

Now that's got me scared, how fragile are these things, haven't got much money to lose at the mo.

Can anyone with a 6300 and ds3 let me know how far they've managed to reliably overclock to?

Cheers

I managed to kill my first E6600 with only an extra 0.05 volts on it and 3gig clock - fairly conservative overclock... I'm thinking it was a dodgy CPU from the start tho as most people have managed to get the E6600 stable on 3gig with stock voltage...

6400 all the way, mine runs up to 3.4ghz on stock volts, don't see many 6600's doing this! the cache won't make a big difference in real world apps

So why you only @ 3.2ghz and how high can you actually go compared to my 6300 which does 3.5ghz?....and your losing out on the extra mem bandwidth by using 8x multi. ;)

because my pc5300 is limiting me, and my geil pc6400 that i got is borked so that's on it's way back!

Hi codex...first off i can't guarantee you'll get 3.5ghz with a 63,64,or even a 66 as it's down to how good the rest of your setup is....but truthfully i'd go for the lowest price....as in Ds3, E6300 and some good ram.....should get you a very decent o/c even if you don't get 3.5ghz at least you ain't spent over the odds....and that is the best bang you can get.

My settings used is the same as i used in this thread with my E6600 but with Vcore @ 1.425 bios....1.39 in windows.

@ Harris1984....so we have to wait to see what you got when you get a replacement then lol.

my motherboards max FSB appears to be 474MHz ( S3 , which is a DS3 with different capacitors )

So, i have it currently at 470MHz with PC5300C4 ram on 1:1 and 2.1V, CPU is the E6300 at stock volts ( 1.312V in CPU-z)

This gives 940MHz on 667MHz rated ram, and 3.3GHz on a 1.86GHz Core. Not bad at all is it lol.

Oh and thats with scythe ninja plus revB & AS5
