e6400 running @3.3GHZ CPU Temp = 55C is that to high ?

Your good at any temp upto 85. So your way off the mark still, Ive idled my cpu at 74c or so for months now and its seen 83c coretemp <- download that or the latest speedfan

74C idle?? Dude you do realise its 85C before it starts to breakdown? The thermal controls can only protect you so far but running at those temps 24/7 will affect the life of your cpu drastically. What cooling do you have? somethings majorly wrong there, either the temps are being misreported or your coolings not on right. If its idling at 74 i'm scared to see what a TAT stress test would run it up to if the thermal protection did'nt kick in and reset the system.

When I say idling, its not being used really. When its used I hop the cpu fan back upto full speed and its at 55c. Under orthos it gets about 70c I think

Ive disabled all the optional thermal protection, Im not sure what happens at 85. I think the solder might melt if it went far beyond that anyway so its not my intention to stress it, just stating Ive been ok at those temps so far.

hsf is ac7

Its the voltage that causes the heat and then if you cut the fan rpm to 800 you
get high temps, not really a fault of the hsf. My point is it works fine anyway if the user can handle the idea of a high number.

The regular temp is 55c which is ok by anyones standards isnt it, I dont care about orthos Ive no app which runs like that

not true, i can hit 3.4Ghz on 1.34v with my E6400, but it still hits mid/high 50s on TAT load, and thats with a 2000RPM fan on an Ultra 120.

Voltage has an effect, but so does freq.

Time to upgrade methinks, that HSF really cant keep up with an OCed C2D at those type of speeds
i got the same cooler , what do you suggest, ps. that noisy i get from it its too anoying aswell :S

During my experimentation with the VERY hot L629B chips i've got i got these temps, this is with the hotter running of the two:

@ 3.4Ghz 1.325v

Idle and TAT Load

AC7 = 56-57 85C and soon after thermal protection

Big Typhoon with stock fan = 47-50C 78C But failed Orthos constantly with load temps of about 72C Orthos, i feel this might be the heatpipes heating up something else

Big Typhoon with SilenX 90CFM fan - 40 -44C But still loaded high in TAT to
75C and Failed Orthos regurlarly - prolly shows the heatsink is being saturated

Thermalright Si 120 with SilenX and YS Tech 105CFM Fan - 48-53 and 43-45 but loaded up to 80C and 77C and failed Orthos a lot, prolly same as Typhoon

Thermalright Ultra 120 with Silenx 90CFM - 39-42C and TAT load never passed 64C, Orthos load never passes 59C and so far is at 29 hours Orthos pri 8
