Well I decided yesterday that I would have a crack at this
I heard a few people had managed to drop there core temps by 10oC but most people seemed to get about 6oC drops

Set up as follows:
E6600 @ 3.1ghz - 1.4v
Thermalright ultra-120 + 120mm fan
AS5 paste

Anyway I have to say im a little disapointed in my results but there was a definate temp drop using Intels TAT

Load using Orthos - 52/53
Load using Seti - 50/51
Idle - 45/46

All taken with central heating on today and no windows open

There is definately a 3-4 degree drop all round there from what I had before... still I would have thought it would have been a little more :( oh well
I used my icemat as the flat surface covered with a sheet of paper to protect it and then 400, 600, 800, 1200 grit papers.... I could not get 1000 grit anywhere

Here are some pics anyway

The idea of doing that to a chip terrifys me lol.

How much does this malarky affect temps?

not a bad finish tho i spose

edit : oops didnt read ya post properly. i would be too scared to do this just for a couple of degrees, but more to the point, that cooler is nice, i wanna buy one sometime

Huh, is it copper under the silver stuff on the E6600 or is it just the light shining on it?

Wont that void the warranty aswell?

You are correct, its copper under the plating.
And it does make your warranty void.

Is it worth doing ?
Sometimes, depends upon if you want the last mhz out of your CPU or not.

Ash,........ What fan are you using with the Ultra ?. + give it a few days and the temp might dop a little more.

Nah m8 it`s so easy to do,just take your time.

now that is shiney!!

I want to do this to mine, but i dont think i will get much out of it, think mine must be pretty level and have nice contact

I thought that until i started to lap, base was not flat
As for temp`s it`s hard to tell as ive fitted new fans to my rads, but im running my E6600 ES @ 3.5ghz idle 34c cpu volt 1.45v,i have my northbridge in the same loop and that puppy get`s hot.

Good job there Ash.

I keep planning on lapping my 6600 and I'm wondering if it is worth it.
For me, I get little difference between idle and load temps. They are almost always in the 50's.
Would this imply that I have a concave chip with poor contact? And therefore lapping would really help? Using a ACF7 Pro btw
Oh, and I couldn't get past 3Ghz oc, brought it down from that as it was already too toasty

Excuse my overclocking-noobiness, never done it before and don't know much about it but what do you mean by 'lapping'?

Does it mean that you increase the clockspeed of the E6600 to go faster than the next conroe in the line (the E6700 or E6800)?

Basically, you sand down the head spreader so it is flatter and smoother that it was. This enable better contact with the base of the heatsink so cools the chip better :)

lapping is the term used when you sand down the CPU like in this thread mate

how the hell did you get a shine like that on the CPU

Oh I understand the relevance now! :) Thanks for the explanations guys.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea at all, I suppose you're losing a lot of surface area if it's not flat. I love the shiny copper finish too, very purty.

Bit of a shame it doesn't result in a bigger temperature drop but 5 degrees isn't shabby at all.
