Hi,

I've currently got my E6600 running at 3.2 (8x400) but idle temps are about 55 degrees.

When I stress test it with Stress Prime 2004 (running two at once)
I get an error after about 5 - 10 mins

Durring the stress test I get temps to about 67 degrees

I understand lowering my Vcore might help, but are there any adverse effects of doing this?

BTW I've got a scythe Ninja.
 
What software you using to monitor temp. Orthos for stress testing. Coretemp or Intel TAT for temp monitoring try setting the fan to highest speed. You might need to re apply thermal paste.. :)
 
Lowering your vcore will help temps but not stability. To get it stable it looks like you may need more vcore but tbh with those temps I would seriously consider investing in some better cooling before doing so.
 
Ok I've tried remounting the heatsink and there is a nice amount of paste on the chip. Installed TAT, when running the system at (400x8) I get the following idle temps...

which seems damn high, also on TAT & system properties its reporting the Max frequency to be 3600MHz?!

Ok I've set it to 1.4v and load temp is 63 degree
Orthos ran for about 1 min before getting an error.

Might have to invest in a better cooler, or maybe I just have a hot chip?
 
The Ninja should be fine.

How much paste did you put on the cpu?

And are you giving your RAM enough voltage?
 
I put the entire packet of paste that came with the heatsink...
Idle temps @ stock are about 40 degrees.

The most stable I can get the chip is 2.8, which is still great but I'd like to get more if possible...
 
That may be your temp problem. You only need a thin line down the middle of the cpu followed by a slight twist of the cooler.

Do you have the RAM voltage set to 2.1v to have it running at 400Mhz?
 
So you would say that this is too much?

Yea that's too much, tho most of it has been squashed out the sides.

Try to get your hands on some Arctic Silver 5 and apply it.
 
Not sure how to remove it, maybe a lint free cloth + some kind of solvent. Also Windows is reporting your speed as 3.6 due to you lowering the multi down to 8, where as the default is 9, 9x400 = 3600.
 
Ok I took off a lot of the paste & remounted the Heatsink & Fan.

I'm currently stress testing it @ 3.2 having set the mem voltage to 2.1 and the Vcore to 1.45

Its been stable in in Orthos for the past 30 mins and temps are about 72 degrees.

what kind of temps are other people seeing with this chip at 3.2?
 
Try setting your multi to 9 and your fsb to 356 - this will give you the same clocks but will require less vcore. Set your vcore to 1.4. Reprot back with temps and stability as 70c @3.2ghz is bad.

What paste did you use when you remounted it? You should clean it properly with some proper solution. I personally would recommend the ArctiClean stuff that OCUK sell. Excellent stuff. And get some Arctic Silver 5 while you're at it. Brilliant stuff. You can get it much cheaper elsewhere though. Then, and only then, will you be on your way to lower temps... ;)
 
Im not sure how you people apply your artic silver 5 but I generally place a small blob in the center of the cpu, then using the end of a bank/visa card spread it wafer thin until the whole cpu is covered very fine, then seat it & apply the cooler you have.

Ok I'll order some Artic paste tomorrow,

I had no stability issues with the system at 400x8 despite the high temps.

I'm trying 356x9 @ 1.4Vcore now and under load its at 64 degrees

However my mem timings have gone from a tight 4-4-4-12 to 5-6-6-18

whats the real world difference between the two?
