E6600 overclock

Strange thing happened this morning, when I had it set to 8x400 last night @ 1.45Vcore I scored 12,000+ in 3DMark 05
What I noticed was that on the cpu only test it was still doing around 5-7 fps

This morning when I've tried 3DMark 05 again i'm only scoring 8000+and the cpu tests are coming in at 1-2 fps

Is this a case of the cpu needing more vcore?

I put the entire packet of paste that came with the heatsink...

lol, yeah I know... stupid is as stupid does ;)

I've just put the machine back to stock for now... and I'm getting 4-5fps on the cpu part of 3dmark05 and my final score was 11696

I run my e6600 @ 3.2 on stock cpu voltage, thats 1.2v for me. idles at 25-27 load is around 37-39 running dual orthos, cooled by a tuniq tower 120. Something is definately up if you need that much voltage and are generating so much heat, could be a poor ihs they seem to be very inconsistant on conroes. Try running the 9 multi with the fsb at 356 you may have more luck :)

Do you think lapping the cpu & heatsink is worth a go?

Because at stock speeds & voltages I am getting about 42degrees idle!

If only I had access to another cpu so I could determine if its the processor or the heatsink!

Dont do anything drastic just yet, you'll void your waranty for starters, check the flatness of the ihs and heatsink with a credit card :)

I'm having similar temperature problems on my E6600. Could you or anyone else elaborate on this. Is it possible they are noticably curved? What can be done if it is? Is it grounds to RMA the heatsink?

Probably more reasonable to RMA the CPU. The IHS on Core2Duo's are very commonly dished. I would not suggest that you lap the IHS as it invalidates the warranty and you'll take a huge hit at resale time.

Im not sure how you people apply your artic silver 5 but I generally place a small blob in the center of the cpu, then using the end of a bank/visa card spread it wafer thin until the whole cpu is covered very fine, then seat it & apply the cooler you have.
That's not how you do it on a Conroe. The actual chip is rectangular in shape and runs down the middle of the CPU. For best results, you should apply a thin line in the middle (but don't go the edge) and then simply place the heatsink on top, giving it a slight twist as you do so. Easy as that. ;)

Oh right cheers, will be handy to know got everything but a motherboard for my conroe setup. I just thought it would be the same procedure.

OMG - did you ejaculate over your CPU or something? ;-)

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL :D

well iv just cleaned my cpu up, cause i just got a new cpu cooler a Arctic cooler freezer pro. and it works perfecto

on my old stock amd cpu cooler i had a heatpad plus 4 layers of cheap thermal stuff, god i was such a noob back in the day :D

best thing to do to clean is just wipe it with some toilet roll, it worked perfect
then i allso buffed it up with a small hand drill with a lot of toilet roll wrapped around the end of the drill bit :)

I wouldn't say that was the best method. You should ideally use a lint free cloth (or coffee filter, as they are lint free). Anything which can leave traces of dust or particles can cause problems, and toilet paper would be far from ideal. Little almost invisible bits could remain on your CPU - not good. I would also recommend the use of ArctiClean. You could clean with toilet paper to get the worst off, but any final cleaning should ideally be done with a lint free cloth and some proper solution. ;)

yup i know i made sure of that, its not ordinary toilet paper its some sort of erm, dno its like a paper towel or somthing lol.

its lint free tho

Not sure on what grounds you could RMA the cpu though, I mean it works at stock speeds little warm maybe but stable.

do u use Core Temp or TAT for checking your temps or u are using Speed Fan or some different programms?

try setting the fan to highest speed. You might need to re apply thermal paste..
i am not trying to be funny but my new AF7is running all the time @ one speed which is around 790RPM, Idle full load all the time same , how can i make it to run faster ? on my old pc i had 120 Zalman Fan and it got delivred with speed control swich, but what can i do with AF7? i got Probe 2 proggram it came together with my mobo, but when i change RPM for Fans in there it just wont change it ,i wonder maybe it wont go faster than 800rpm?

Well tonight I'm going to take the cpu out and take a look to see if its concaved. If it is I'll consider lapping it, reading elsewhere on the net it seems that quite a few ppl have hot E6600's

I'm not going to RMA it... its the luck of the draw and its not as if the cpu doesn't work.

Is there just as much chance that the heatsink could be as concaved as the cpu?
