E6600 to Q6600 a good idea?

Yes a q6600 is a nice temporary boost I just don't think it's worth £85 + though is all, max I'd pay today is £65 for one.

Firstly, spell "dual" correctly!

Secondly, that's not what he asked!

Thirdly, that's not true at all if you look at some of the new gen dualies (I3 anyone?).

Anyways, what do you use your PC for? That has a large bearing on your requirements.

Touchy arent we?

This has nothing to do with I3's anyway, hes talking about merely upgrading his CPU.

Probably only worth it overall if you can get it on the cheap but the boost should be quite fun for you :)

Not going to happen when core i3 / Amd remains so affordable I can only see the q6600 price coming down even further.

I have seen 95w go for £65 here recently and I wouldn't be paying anything over that for one.

People just aren't going to pay £85-£100 for old tech much longer you are getting in to quad core i5 territory near £100.

You'd get £55 for your ddr2 ( thats a dead cert) and £15-£50 for 965/p35/p45 and £20-£70 for a 775 dual so why people are still willing to pay £85 + for a q6600 is beyond me.

Would make more sense to sell up and move to Amd or core i3/5/7 I'd rather have a core i3 system than a 775 q6600 based system that's for sure even if it were slightly slower.

So if you want to throw £85 + at a q6600 you may as well sell it all up and you'll be shelling out about £60 ish more to get a core i3 setup.

Even though you can sell your dual core to bring the cost of the q6600 down I'd still rather save for £60 ish extra and get core i3.

What would you rather do shell out £50-£60 for a q6600 or shell out £100-£120 after sales from your current hardware for a new board ddr3 and core i3 chip ? know which I'd rather do.Especially when your motherboard and dual core resale value is only going to get worse and worse not to mention the inevitable 2x2gb ddr2 price drop.

So I advise anyone not to upgrade a 775 to a q6600 unless it's £60-£65 just go for corei3 minimum whilst the price of ddr2 second hand is at a high.

Have to admit I almost got suckered in myself looking at replacing my 6420 with a q6600 but I did the sums and figured I'd be better off going corei3
I'd get a q6600 if it were going dirt cheap though like £50-£60.

What you are saying is sensible but after previous sockets, plently of people come out of the woodwork after an upgrade and determined not to upgrade their motherboard, and silly as it might seem, to keep their 3 year old windows XP installation. That's what pushes EOL CPUs up in price. Everyone gets the same idea. I've give up on 'upgrade path' CPU's. I bought my i5 with the intention of keeping it a few years then buying all new. If an i5 4ghz quad CPU became available at a good price then I would be tempted but realistically, if they ever did get released, they would be a silly price and in the shadow of a new equal/cheaper price better platform. It's just the way that it goes.

Not touchy at all, just hate ignorance.

This has everything to do with I3's. You said

Quad > Duel. :D

And I said not neccessarily and used the I3 as an example.

I think he would get a boost considering the software he's using, but I'd still try and hang on for the new architecture coming out.

Made a very similar upgrade (E6600 to Q6700 both @ 3.4ghz) and the performance increase was quite noticable. Especially in games that make use of a Quad e.g. Dirt 2 was a very laggy before and silky smooth after my upgrade. ;)

Think I'll keep a look out for a Q6600 then, just seen some benchmark results with a dual core vs. quad on Bad Company 2 and the difference is rather large! Now to find one going for a decent price! :(

I should hope so!

Forget the cores, you've gone from 2.8 to 3.6. That's a big jump in raw horsepower irrespective of cores.

But I'm not convinced I'd see much difference going from my 4Ghz dualy to a 3.6Ghz quad. Whaddya think 1337z0r?

EDIT: Why do you state your Q6600 oc but only state your E6300 stock? Anyone else think this is a little disingenuous?

Maybe you just couldn't get your 6300 past stock 2.8? (although I think my cat could do that)

Just to clear up a few things my E6300 was one of the first editions at a stock speed of 1.83Ghz, I managed to get it too 3.3ghz when I had 4GB RAM but could not get past 3Ghz stable when I upgraded to 8GB so I kept the CPU at 2.8Ghz on stock volts.

My Q6600 is rock solid at 3.6Ghz with a Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120 and as I said before it has boosted my systems peformance a lot over a dual core CPU.

As to my forum name, I think I joined these forums when I was 14 so I think that speaks for its self :)

I got a used q6600 for £70 I did the same upgrade a few months down the line is definitely worth it if you pay under £100. You will notice it a lot more snappier in windows and games will play faster, also most of them can clock to 3.0ghz on stock volts

Just thought I'd let all you guys know I took the plunge and bought a Q6600 G0, got it for £85, a little more than I'd like to have paid but it should be worth it in the end! Now to just wait for it to arrive then I'll clock the balls off it! :P
