Right, i moved my computer, turned it on and after short while it turned itself off.

I checked in the bios and the CPU was in the 90s (centigrade) not good.

I checked the fan on *** cpu was working, it is.

I pressed down on the pressy things.

It now is running at 66 idle.

This is clearly still too hot. i dont have any thermal paste or even anything to clean the cpu and heatsink with if i did.

If i removed and reseated the heatsink fully would i need to apply new or would the old be ok. Its been on for some time.

On a second note, can anyone recomend an easy to fit heatsink as the stock intel one is rubbish. I dont want to have to remove the mobo from the case either.

Thanks
Zero.

Artic Freezer 7 Pro is a good one for Intels range at the moment. For now I'd get some AS5 apply it, then reseat the cooler.

Yep, likely situation: You moved it, it came very unseated and shut down constantly.. you reseated it but the thermal compound is all messed up so it'll be running high temps. Cheapest option is prolly to get some thermal compound and reapply it.

i just pushed it down a bit more, idles at 30-35c

still thinking of getting a new one though.

Actualy moving house in 7 days so must remeber to check cpu temps first.

Thanks for the advice though.

ontopic: I'd get some new thermal compound, apply it and reseat it very smoothly. Just take your time doing things like this so you don't mess it up, it's worth it ;)

offtopic: Hmm wondering, my mate wants to overclock his E6600 to and I've tried to help him with it but his E6600 idles @ 50+- degrees stock with intel heatsink, this seems high to me... Is this a matter of thermal compound or is that HSF just rubbish? I though my E2160 stock HSF was pretty good or aren't they the same? I checked his airflow, it seemed OKish.

I think its the design of the fittings to be fair.

If he pushes down on the clip-peg things whilst also pushing on the centre of the fan he should get a good contact. Thats what i did, and like i say its now the coldest its ever been.

Yep the intel stock fan does a decent job. Speedstepped down to 2.2 ghz at idle core 0 is 21 and core 1 is 20 degrees for me. Doesn't cope too well under load, clocked at 3.3 ghz I get temps between 55-65 which whilst not being the best are great for a stock hs+fan.
Idling in the 50-60's should not be happening! I'm guessing that one or more of the pegs are not clipped down properly or the thermal paste is bad stuff.
After 5 mins of orthos mine is at 56 degrees @3.3 ghz with 1.35 vcore.
