E6600 Vs newer cpus ?

Strangely I don't buy non OC motherboards or cheap ram, or cheap Gfx but for some reason leave it at stock, even though I know my hardware probably wouldn't set alight, maybe its the fear of becoming addicted to OCing and buying more and more elaborate cooling hardware.
Retail Intel CPU cooler not the best for OCing was just in a rush to order last time I built.

Up to 45 degrees after 2 hours of TF2 (I'm aware thats not the best overclock benchmark)

Right I've finally downgraded to a gigabyte P31-DS3L, e6700 @3.2ghz, 4gb 8500 ram (which is running at 500mhz,) and powercolor 4870 512mb at stock speed.
I ran the crysis benchy and got "2" frames more than before, thats 40fps at 1900 x 1200, all on high, whereas before I got 38 at the same settings with just Xfire disabled. All games appear to run at identical fps, me pc is cooler and quieter.
So result all round then I think. This only applies to gaming like I said earlier, but I could have saved meself a bomb had I have known this before. As said, the only thing that appears to make a difference is the vidcard, nowt else, I even got nearly the same score while running with 2gb pc6400 memory, although I saw the h/d light flash a good few times.

Went to 3GHz today but it didn't like it and wouldn't boot, back to 2.8GHz.

What mobo are you using?, whats the vcore? what memory? If its reasonable quailty gear you should be able to get 3.2ghz @ (400mhz x 8 multi), give it about 1.45v Vcore to start with and then drop the voltage down till it becomes unstable, then take it back up a notch, keep an eye on temps as you're using a stock cooler. make sure your ram is set at 1:1 (assuming you have pc6400 (800ddr), that'll negate any ram probs you might have . Try that lot and see how you get on, most e6600 cpus will go straight up to 3.2ghz (400 x 8) with just a bump in Vcore, the temps will be well within accepted limits and if not the cpu will throttle back to look after itself!

The P31 DS3L is actually a cracking board. I got a E2180 to 3.6Ghz on one. They can still be found for around £40 so are still a bargain too. I paid £18 for a brand new one off the bay. :D The bloke selling it bought it to drop a AMD X2 in it. :D:D He did'nt realise it was a different socket. I should have got it for a fiver but some git had a bid in the closing seconds.

This is rather interesting. The performance is almost identical (i guess the difference is due to the cache) and the power consumption from 45nm to 65nm is really laughable, all those people on here who told me 45nm use a lot less power lol!

Mb is Abit AB9

Ram GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC5300 667MHz

Not touched my Vcore its at 1.325, just wouldn't boot once I moved the fsb to 333x9. Don't really want to up the V's as I'm not happy with the Intel retails HSFs colling ability.

Right I reckon your problem there is that the ram is bombing out, you're going to be limited by that unless it overclocks well, (crucial ballistics overclock real well 'frinstance) I don't know about the giel 667, but the giel 6400 (800ddr) should do around 425mhz-435mhz (I had mine at 425 for ages). Thats one possiblity. the next is that it appears you've hit a wall at 333mhz, ie: even a slightly higher figure than this and its no boot right? try ensuring your "pci-e bus" option the bios is set "auto", if that don't work, select 100mhz and tyr again. post back with results.:)

I think if I had a 4Ghz Wolfdale instead of this 3.2Ghz E6600 I would gain about 20 fps on Crysis, from what I've seen in benchmarks.

At the minute I get the same framerate at 800x600 as I do at 1920x1200!

I just spent a few days confirming that increasing cpu speed over 3.2ghz or therabouts yields the same performance as a cpu at 3.825ghz. The only thing that makes a difference is the gpu. As I said in a few posts back, I've replaced an e8400 @ 3.825ghz with an e6700 @ 3.2ghz, and replaced me X38 mobo for a budget p31-ds3l, and I get identical results in crysis benchmark and as near as I can tell in game also (theres certain points in the game where,in the past, I've saved and noted the fraps figure).
