E7200, E8400 or E8500?

Hey all,

My current Q6600 is an extremely poor overclocker, but a friend of mine, who doesnt overclock, has offered to buy it off me. What i am now wondering, as i feel more pulled towards a Wolfdale, is which one, i'm looking for one to hit, ideally - 4GHz+ if possible. I understand that the E8500 can do it easily, but are the E7200 and E8400 just as easy to clock that far?

Also, i am looking for my pc to run silent, so any recommendations on a cooler, I was looking at the AC Pro7 for it, but not sure how it would do with a Wolfdale!

TIA!

Hi

See my signature...I hope it helps. I am unsure whether you will be able to get it to run silent without it getting too warm. I have the large 200mm fan on the top of my antec 900 running on setting 3 (highest) and I have set the rear fan to high to ensure that all the heat is drawn away from th Arctic Freezer 7 Pro. My idle temperatures are 41 and 42 degrees C and the highest I have ever seen on prime is 68 degrees C. With any games the cores never run at above 58 degrees C.

i would rule the e8500 out as the extra .5 multiplier isnt worth the extra cost if you have a good MB.

personally i would pick the e8400 if you can afford to, for cooling try the thermalright ultra extreme 120 and a quiet 120mm fan and fan controller.

Nice one!

That looks extremely tempting.

What sorts of temps and voltage is that running with?

E8400 the E8500 is £80 extra for 166Mhz more :|

Yeah, the reason i wondered though, was as the E8500 has the 9.5 multi!

Right, I was looking at the TRUE120 a bit since, appears to be a good cooler, would it fit in a Cooler Master 330 case though?

most boards have a fine tune option that adds .5 to the multiplier or you could do a very light overclock and you've saved £80!

I just edited my original post giving the temperatures, so please re-read.

Edited.
The voltage is 1.33v.
Idle
Core 0 = 41 C
Core 1 = 42 C

Load with prime both cores = 68 C after 6 hours
Load with games both cores = 58 C (all day flying IL2 Forgotten Battles using 1920 x 1200) with the following settings using nHancer

AA= SLI 64xS (16xS SSAA + 2x SLI SS (OpenGL))
AF= 16S

These settings give me an average of 100fps.

I must re-iterate this is with the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro.

The graphics cards tend to run high at 81 C and 82 C, but then at 1920 x 1200 at the current AA and AF I am not surprised, and that is why I have the fans set on high. Keeps the room warm in the winter.

I hope this helps.

thanks a lot for that mate :D

E8400 + Thermalrite Ultra 120 Extreme + Noctua NF-P12 = Silent 4Ghz system

Just looked at that fan, looks mint! I think i'll probably get that combination :D Woop Woop.

Thanks everyone!!

GunRunner, it sounds like you got a gem of a chip there, nice low volts for that speed. Below the big scary 1.4V =0

Either i'm doing something wrong or I've found a bit of an awsome chip here.

Thats with 1.18v (shown on CPUz) on LOAD running Folding@Home

Yes thanks. It seems as though I was lucky when I purchased if from OcUK. I have been trying to see if I can get it to 4.2Ghz and beyond, but no go! Not that I would run it at that continually. I have increased to 1.4v, but it just stops in the BIOS.

I see some people are getting up to 4.5ghz! Care to pass on the information as to how you are doing it? I have an EVGA 780i motherboard and there are other settings that I have left on default as follows:

CPU FSB......................(auto) = 1.3v
nForce SPP .................(auto) = 1.4v
nForce MCP..................(auto) = 1.5v
HT nforce SPP <-> MCP..(auto) = 1.2v

My FSB QDR is 1822 with 455 x 9.

I have left the RAM at default of 2.1 volts and 800mhz. I used to run it at the same voltage and 925mhz on the EVGA 680i motherboard with an E6600, but on this mboard prime fails within minutes showing a hardware error.
