Hi all. I am relatively new to the overclocking business but after having followed peers for approximately a year I decided to go ahead and try my own rig. I chose the E8400 and the Biostar i45 as I knew it is a brilliant combination (despite the lack of western documentation). I know that it is possible to get this cpu to 4GHZ+ (maybe) but i am having major difficulties with achieving anything close! I ahve managed to obtain a clock speed of 3.2GHz, but anything over that and i fail to POST. :( Please could someone help me out?

Thanks in advance!!

Francis

SPECS:
CPU: E8400 @3.00GHz (stock) 1.264V
Cooler: Titan Fenrir
MB: Biostar T-Power i45
GPU: nVidia 8600gts (stock)
RAM: 2x1GB Patriot at 432.9MHz
OS: Windows xp professional
Case: Antec 900
PSU: Xilence 400W Gaming PSU

The RAM speed would suggest the strap is wrong - set the BSEL to FSB to 400MHz and that should give you some more headroom straight away.

I've had a look at the Manual and it doesn't give any options that are obvious. Have you tried the V12 AUTO-OVERCLOCK as that looks pretty aggressive.

Hey. Thanks for the quick reply. The V12 overclock fails to POST. I'm Automatically thinking there is something wrong with it all! Hope it isn't anything to do with my PSU. It seems pretty reliable.

I will try the BSEL mod and let you know what happens.

Thanks

Iv had my E8400 to 4.5ghz, so they will go over 4ghz comfortably, its just u need to tweak all the voltage settings, like the vtt, fsb, chipset, vcore.

Can take abit of playing about really.

Hey all. Sorry, i'm still having some trouble. I've managed to settle on 3.1GHz (hardly worth mentioning) but don't seem to be able to push any more. Anyone got any ideas? @krooton, here is my memory specs:

2x1024MB
Manufacturer : PDP Systems
Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399 MHz) - [DDR2-800]
Format : Regular UDIMM (133.35 x 3)
Size : 1024 MB (2 ranks, 4 banks)

Cheers all in advance

You seem to have unbranded 400mhz ram, and with the E8400's multi of 9x, the max you should expect is 3.6Ghz.

I had to upgrade to branded 533mhz to get my 3.5Ghz, though I should be able to get another 200mhz out of it with some tweaking, I've just been lazy.

I'll post up some pics of my BIOS settings for you this evening.

As above: you'll need to cut down the DRAM dividier to its lowest setting and then - as Krooton suggested - you will not get very far.

DDR2-XXXX is pretty dirt cheap nowadays, so sticking some in is probably your best course of action.

Can my RAM go above 400fsb? In my sig.

Most 6400 ram will go over 400mhz running 1:1 with the fsb, but how far is all down to the quality of the memory, and the ram timings. Ram from Ocz, and other top makers will easily hit 900mhz if not more, its all down to quality.

For example mine will go upto 900mhz running 4,4,4,12 timmings but i have to slacken them to 5,5,5,18 to have my memory run at 1000mhz, which is the limit of my memory.

The best way to test how far your memory will go, is to put ur multiplier to its lowest setting, that way ur overclocking the memory more then the cpu.

Ok got it up to 3.8GHZ. Are idle temps of 49c - 51c and full load temps of 67c (using OCCT 1hour) ok?

Hey all. I'm still having trouble. I have Partriot 800Mhz DDR2. I'm not too sure why its saying I have unbrandd 400Mhz. :(

Still gettin g overclock fails on anythign over around 3.3GHz.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Alright mate i will help you out as much as possible if you still need help, i have a very similar rig sept i have: 4 GB OCZ Reaper 1150mhz/ 500w OCZ stealthXtreme PSU/ CM 690 case/ all the other stuff is the same and i have 4.1ghz stable overclock.

The TPower pluss E8400 is a very easy set up to overclock so you should have no problems unless any of your bits are faulty.

ahh thankyou. Do you have any idea why my memory could be showing such a poor freq? Could this be hindering stability?

rosyglo seems someone hijacked your thread a little eh ? :)

try using 1.3V for CPU.

Also what is saying you have unbranded ram ?

Cpu-z dos'nt read all memory by name, so some will come up as un-branded no need to worry about this, its not ur memory its cpu-z.

Also its showing the real speed of the memory 400mhz, or to most people 800mhz, DDR = Double data rate, so what ever cpuz reports ur memory speed to be just double it and thats what the true speed will be.

Also about the overclock failing still, like vark said, try raising the vcore up a notch and test again, and keep repeating until stable.
