E8400 Overclock

Hey, so I only heard about the tool, Intel Burn Test a couple of days ago. I'm relatively new to overclocking and have read many guides provided here, so gave a go at overclocking. I have a couple of questions I'd like answered.

Is this tool a good standard for overclocking? I usually use Prime95 and using these setting it has ran stable for 6 hours. I read (and see) that 100% load temps on IBT are a lot (about 10+c for me) higher than in Prime95, so when using IBT should you still use 70c as the max limit (I know you can go a bit over but I like to stick to 70) or higher? Also is it safe to stress test with only using IBT, although I think to be safe I would use it to set up an initial overclock then test with Prime95 over a longer period if it passed IBT.

I haven't changed the PPL or FSB Termination voltage at all, they are set to auto, should they be manually set?

Do the below settings/results seem "normal"? Cheers.

Mobo: ASUS P5Q Deluxe
RAM: 4GB Kingston HyperX PC2-6400
Cooler: Zalman CNPS8000

CPU Voltage: 1.24375 (in BIOS)
DRAM Voltage: 1.8

Results Screeny

Personaly (not saying this is law/gosple) i would allow it to run up to 80-85 since intel burn isnt on for long periods and causes temps to go higher than you will get running any benchmark or games etc

That's great on those volts, although your cpu cooler is letting you down a bit here. Using nearly the same setup I get max 65 under load with higher volts than that. You should be able to push up to 4.5GHz with better cooling no probs (and probably some 1066 ram).

Just as an aside, you inspired me to push a bit further, and .065v later and about 10 degrees hotter I found myself at 4.5GHz. Was too terrified of the temps to run it at max stress for a decent amount of time, but ran orthos and temps were peaking at 55C which is fine by me. Big push though, I think 4GHz is really the sweet spot for these chips.

My first choice is always Prime 95 for at least 8hours my current Overclock a ran prime for 16hours till i was satisfied my temps were good and had stability

I think people are confusing the overall cpu temp limit given by intel with max core temps.

Intel state i think (without checking) maximum cpu temp is 72.4c, thats not for cores, thats for overall.

The TJmax (core temps) for that cpu are 100c, so as you are under 70 still on core temps, you have a lot more head room to go.

I personally allways check overall cpu temp and core temps, but if you have ur bios set up so it will not go above the intel max spec, then you will be fine.

Yeah mate, considering I have quite an old case with a not so great cooling and terrible cable management, as well as a not so great CPU cooler, I think it's quite good. I will eventually get a new case and cooler, hopefully dropping the temps quite a bit. Can anyone recommend a great CPU cooler? I was looking at this, is there any better for the same money, or a lot better if I spend a bit more? Cheers.

I got the cooler in my spec for £13 and get the temps posted above, so bang for buck...it ain't bad. Bit noisy though, and I suspect it's no longer sold on OCuk. My point is that you don't need to spend £50 on a cooler if you just want to squeeze 5-10 degrees off. Saying that, I'd like to get up to 5GHz and am a bit limited by temps.
