Hi

I noticed today that my E8400 was running at 2.4Ghz, I went to the bios and the FSB was set correctly. I loaded optimized settings which changed the FSB to 333 but when I reboot the CPU still runs at 2.4Ghz (FSB 266).

I had the CPU overclocked to 3.3GHz (small overclock) and this was running fine. I have a Gigabyte 965p-DS3 rev 3.3.

Why does the CPU default to 2.4Ghz? Is something damaged?

well it doesn't sound like speed step because that reduces the multiplier. Try clearing the CMOS and starting again.

Hi,

I've cleared the cmos and the issue is still there.

No matter what I change the fsb stays at 266.

Any ideas?

check your memory what divider you have it on - it may be resetting itself on a failed oc.

when you increase the fsb make sure the mem divider result is under 1066 -I assume thats the ram you have as it works fine at 266 - 1:1 (266*4 = 1064)

Yes I am running the latest bios.

I have checked the bios and the memory divide is set to Auto.

I experimented with it but the CPU continues to run @2.4 with FSB 266.

I'm a little lost now.

I'm thinking the CPU may be damaged?
But then the system would not start at all right?

I set the divide to 4.0+ and the system at first did not show anything and I reset.

The fsb displayed as 137 and speed of 1.2Ghz.

subsequent changes of divider ( 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.3) show no effect.

I'm now stuck on 1.2Ghz, any ideas?

What else can I try?

Reverted back to an older bios version and still no luck.

Any pointers to what the problem could be?

Changing the multiplier seems to take effect but fsb does not shift and is now not budging from 137.

you should be able to change the fsb manually?

might be teaching you to suck eggs but set the fsb setting to manual and select 333

Tenzen, the fsb is set to manual and 333. No changes, up or down, take effect.

I'm going to change the memory in the machine later on this evening to make sure that is not causing the problem.

I think it could still be a ram issue. See the thread linked above - same problem with 965p board. have you tried in different mem slots - or just try with one stick?

Its either RAM or Mobo, the cpu is most likely fine if it is booting up fine.

As the guy above said also - launch prime or smg and load up cpu-z see what it says.

Also bear in mind that the memory may need to be overvolted from the default mobo setting - but would need to know what mem you have.

It may well possibly be the motherboard as my old DFI 975X/G done something simular, showed the cpu FSB as 200mhz instead of 266, tried 2 different cpu's and memory the same thing kept happening, sent the board away to DFI they upgraded some parts and seemed to work fine after I recieved the board back with all original components.

Sorted :D

Well this morning I switched on the computer and nothing had changed - the problem was still there. I decided to take the computer apart. The plan was to unplug from the mains, remove the battery and leave it all day before putting it back together. If that did not work then a new motherboad.

I switched the computer off and turned OFF the POWER SUPPLY swtch. I had not done this yesterday, so thought I would see if that had any effect and guess what it did! :D

The FSB was running at 333. I've now done a mild OC to 3.4Ghz and no problems so far.

I really cannot explain it but I'm not complaining.

Thanks for your help.
