I'm in the process of building a new system to replace my ageing P4 3.0(ic7max3/1.5GB Pc3200) system. At the moment I have a few components for the upgrade.. Gigabyte ga-p35-ds4, 4gig crucial ballistix pc6400.... but i have been having second thoughts about my processor choice. Up until now I have been looking at a q6600 but now i am starting to think more along the lines of an E8400. OS choice is another thing i haven't settled on. At the moment I am using vista 32bit but i was also considering vista 64bit....

This system will be mostly used for photoshop, word, excel, dreamweaver, newsbin pro, burning dvd's & cd's,

What should i go for?

Anyone else sick of these threads by now? :)

E8400 if you want to play games
Q6600 if you're using multi-threaded apps that allocate said quad cores to different tasks. i.e. rendering, video editing etc.

I personally prefer the E8400, but given that you'll be using dreamweaver and photoshop the quad makes more sense..and it can happily be oc'd to 3.0ghz on little more than stock voltage.

i would go q6600, as from that list of programs, i think 2 extra cores will outweigh less cores but more MHz on the cpu.

As per above and below. After seeing your list of what you use it for, this is a no brainer - q6600. Say no more

I think I'm going to get the 8400. I do use some apps that would benefit from the extras cores (video processing mainly) but I don't mind waiting for them in a way that I do mind waiting for games.

but the question is how much difference is there between the q6600 and e8400 when it comes to video?
cos i'm now stuck between these two cpu's as well :/

I don't agree with the dual for gaming, quad for everything else stuff at all. With a stock Q6600 and a stock E8400 you only see a tiny FPS difference at low resolutions (1024x768) and as you scale up to sensible ones there's no gap. CPU will only help your 3D mark scores.... Q6600 is such a bargain, as good as the E8400 for games and better at some other tasks.

I really dont think you will notice an realworld difference in games between a reasonably clocked Q6600 and an E8400... benchmarks yes you will notice some difference but what you will notice is a huge difference in your other apps between a quad and a duel.. Q6600 is a no brainer here

well, q6600 its is. just means getting a new mobo too.
the old e6400 just isnt cutting the fat anymore, not with huge files & tasks
