Hi There
I have the chance to buy E8400 for £70.00,mate of mine has only had it 3 months.
I currently have a Q6600 overclocked to 3.5ghz,i've read that the E8400 will o/c to 4ghz and is quicker in games,is it worth it for £70?
Rest of my rig is Asus p5q pro m/b and 4870x2
Thanks
Steve

Nah, keep the Q6600. In the upcoming months/years most games will start using all four cores. This is coming from someone with an E8400 aswell. Keep the Q6600 and get a good cooler for it.

Cheers Macky
Can you recommend a decent cooler, got a Xigmatek1283 but one of the rubber lugs has bust.
Thanks

I really dont think you would see much of a difference mate. Also coming from someone with an e8400 :) In May's edition of custom pc they did a full and comrehensive labs test on 41 different CPU's at standard and overclocked speeds. In the crysis benchmark the e8400 and q6600 both clocked to max stable clocks on the system they where using, Both produced the same framerates 46fps. Interestingly the i7 only got 47fps :)

Beast of a cooler here :-

Cheers for that,i just thought with it being really cheap and most e8400's overclocking to 4ghz i would benefit in games.
Saved me £70 guys:)

Zalman coolers suck for performance, they look incredible though. I would go with the Thermalright Ultra 120. Or a Sunbeam one. Or if you want a really cheap one that does quite well, Arctic Cooling Pro 7.

Zalman coolers DO NOT suck for performance my friend has one on his e8400 and Running 4gig temps where under 60 at full load
Take a look at the chart on this page and tell me where the zalman is in relation to the thermalight 120

Well I dunno. On most of them I have heard people saying that much cheaper coolers do just as well.

It would probably be best for you to say that in the first place then mate rather than just jumping to a conclusion that something sucks without having any first hand knowledge of it eh ;)

£70 is a good price though, i'd be inclined to take it anyway! Clock for clock, the E8400 should be faster than a q6600, and it'll probably reach 4GHz, which is fairly rare for a q6600. For today's games the E8400 would outperform the quad, but for future games, as long as they support quad cores properly, the quad would win out, especially if you can get one to OC to 3.6.

erm tbh if you can sell ur Q6600 for 100£ then yes buy it off your mate!
about the cooler titan fenir currently the highest rated cooler about and it is not at a ridiculous price either:D and tbh a Q6600 @ 3.5ghz will do me for the next couple years tbh:D

Yeah, probably the best option if that's the case. However, I'm in the market for a new CPU and I wouldn't pass up that offer of £70, it's a good price.

Thanks for all the advice, decided to snap it up for that price and have a play around, can always sell it on
