Which one is better and why? E8400 vs Q6600

I have Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 memory on a Socket 775 DFI motherboard.
For gaming such as COD4 MW2, TF2, CSS etc.

if u are only concerned about these type of games than blindly e8400

for future games and even games of 2010, you will be needing a quad core .

Depends on price difference really. Quad is much preferable, a lot of games are now using multi cores. Bbc2 for example, you can see a lot of activity across all 4 cores.

yep really depend for what you need taht procs...i'm using e8400 and I'm happy with it

Hello KHALIK :)

Are you overclocking? . . . if so the quad would be the better option if wanting to keep ahead of the curve?

a lot of games are still fine on a fast DualCore but a few new games want more than two cores . . . a TripleCore is pretty much the sweetspot now and shows good gains in a few games!

DO you have a choice between these two processors? . . . buying used or new?

Thank you,

I shall be looking into buying a new processor as I have lost complete confidence in buying used. I will not be overclocking, thou I have Corsair H50 cooler ready to used on the chipset.

My motherboard is dfi x48 t3rs, supporting DD3 memory on socket 775. I already 8GB of ddr3.

I have noticed;

Q6600 @ 1066MHZ @ 8MB Cache (65nn)
E8400 @ 1333MHZ @ 6MB Cache (45nn)

Which is better, as I am looking to buy Call Of Duty Black Ops.

I already got all my components, excluding Intel cpu.

I just want to know which one is a better spec, that will go nicely with my existing system, I see the fsb difference and 65/45nn difference.

I don't understand this myself . . . if you feel like telling us how or why you have "lost complete confidence in buying used" maybe we can put your fears to rest?

I can't believe yet another OcUk forum user is about to give Intel® money for old rope! :(

I will not be overclocking

Oh good grief . . . buying either a two or three year old processor brand new and not overclocking it either . . . . I'm melting . . . . melting . . . melting! ;)

If you are unwilling to overclock the chip I would suggest that neither is any good.

I myself use a E8400 @ 4Ghz, and although I get the "upgrade urge" every now and then I still cant see any reason or justification to swap it (unless I find a Q9** 2nd hand that will do 4ghz).

BTW I can play BFBC2 @ 1080, 4 x AA, 16 AF Full settings without any issues.

Quad core over Dual anyday....i made the same decision when buying my new cpu...either E8400 or Q6600 and im very glad i choose the Q6600.

Have it overclocked to 3.5Ghz and it handles anything i throw at it with ease.

Hi there,

To be honest I don't think this is a good idea. The Intel Core 2 series of CPUs are all end-of-life, buying one of them new makes very little sense to me because they are not priced to compete with current generation chips - and are almost always a terrible deal.

The best way to get round this is to buy second hand, as people will only pay what they are worth. In the case of the Q6600 this is around £80.

As for being worried about second-hand CPUs, please put this out of your mind. Intel Core 2 CPUs are basically bomb-proof, so long as you buy from a reputable seller you will be A-OK and save yourself a bundle compared to buying "new".

As for H50 on the "chipset", please tell me you mean the "CPU".

If you do mean CPU, then why did you buy a £60 cooler if you don't plan to OC? Surely a £10 air cooler (or the intel stock one) will be more than sufficient.

If you are determined to buy a new CPU, then go for a Yorkfield Quad core (Q8000 and Q9000 series). Paying more than £80 for a dual core does not make any sense these days - so leave the E8400 alone. As Big Wayne says, games are increasingly using more than two cores.

@ Big.Wayne

I brought a faulty cpu under members market and still awaiting to receive a refund. Do I need to say more?

You purchased a used CPU from a person with 0 trust. You took a gamble there and got burned. There are other ways to buy used and safeguards to take to remedy that.

I purchase probably 80% of my comp components used and have only had 1 issue in all these years(knock on wood). Buying a used CPU has paid off for a lot of people on these boards and will save you a lot of cash.

Your best bet is to buy a Q6600 or better quad and overclock it a little. Simply screen who you buy from better and put that Corsair H50 to some use. Buying either of those new and at retail and not cranking it up a bit with that cooler is a waste imo.

Whilst I dont agree that its a good idea to not overclock, i will point out that there are more reasons why someone would choose to buy an H50-1. Firstly they are quiet, not all of us enjoy listening to howling pcs. Secondly they are compact and not all cases can take the latest behemoths such as the DH14, tuniq towers etc etc.

Thirdly, ummm, no thats it they should be used to overclock at least a tiny bit! Oh and to counter my argument, why waste £60 on an H50-1 when the stock coolers cool sufficiently well with little noise?

I went from an E8400 @ 3.6GHz to a Q6600 @ 3.2GHz and can confirm that BC2 loves quads (got a 20+ FPS boost). For everything else I havent noticed a bean of difference though. Quads are the way forward
