Was thinking on upgrading my current cpu, an e6600, as i have no confidence in overclocking, and saw that the E8400 stock speed is 3ghz, which seems to be fine, now one of my problems is will my current memory be ok or will i need to buy new stuff

Need to ask as i will also need to upgrade my bios to a beta version to run the Cpu.

RAM is fine

Your RAM is absolutely fine with that CPU.

With that RAM you can do what I did and simply increase the FSB to match the RAM in 1:1 (leaving all the voltages at stock) for a cool 3.6GHz...I'm not a big overclocker myself, but that's a seriously easy tweak :)

Might require a decent cooler, but my temps are plenty low on quiet air with a Noctua HSF.

I did this very thing - went from E6600 to E8400. On my P5B Deluxe the E8400 went straight to 3.6Ghz. In fact, I can get it to about 3.9 before the thing locks up. I've ordered some replacement memory as I think that is the problem.

The only downside (for me) of the E8400 is the temp reporting. Plenty of threads on the web about the thing reporting high temps. Mine does and the fans go mad. I use Speedfan to pull them back to a quiet level. My box was pretty near silent with the E6600 @ 2.7GHz but even at stock the E8400 was noisy. This in an Antec P180 box. Speedfan shows mid 50s when idle, CoreTemp shows 55/65 at idle, rising to 70s when working reasonably hard. Haven't really pushed it hard yet though. This using a Freezer 7 Pro HSF.

Anyway, with better memory, I reckon mine will run past 4GHz no worries (touches wood) on air (albeit a touch noisily at times).

Went from E6600 to E8400, using same 4GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300 on a Gigabyte GA P35 DS3P and am running the E8400 @4.2....will also do 4.5GHz for benching purposes.....the E8400 o/c's very well...

What sort of performance increase have you got in games/apps over the old E6600, any idea?

Haven't had a chance to do much with it yet as my HD is playing up. I'm going to put in a new HD, reinstall Vista and then go from there.

I have had a play with the temp issue I mentioned. Following a thread elsewhere I checked on voltages and it seems that with 'auto' set, my mobo had taken the Vcore to 1.5v+! No wonder it's hot. I've played with it and am currently showing 1.208v in CPU-Z and the temps are somewhat lower (8-10degC I think).

I'll play further with this once the new memory and HD are in place (should be here tomorrow all being well).

I suppose I'd better dld some of the oft quoted benchmarking software to give an idea of what it'll do. I'm hoping for 4GHz+ but I'll have to wait and see...
