E90 on it's last legs, time for a replacement?

Doesn't want to spend £1,650 to fix known car because capital is tied up in house.

Happy to spend £8k on an unknown car.

I replaced my e46 330d turbo myself for £450 (recon unit with trade of mine). Took about 3 hours with nothing more than a halfords socket set, a trolley jack, and axle stands.

That must have been a good feeling. I replaced my headlight washer jet and felt chuffed! :D

I'm torn between the two from the point do I pour another ~£2K into a car that's 10 years old, or do I spend more and try and get a newer car with under 100k's worth of miles
 
I've never understood the logic of spending 4x on a new car because current car requires x to repair it, unless you want a change and this is a good excuse.

You've done the clutch (£1k) Turbo etc. is £1,650 — Glow plugs and brakes shouldn't be more than a £1k.

Even if all the repairs came to £4k, you'd still have £4k in the bank and a car with a lot of brand new components that should go on for another 150k miles. Plus, you know the car, it's history, how it's been treated etc.

If you're saying you want a new car, that's a slightly different proposition. :)
 
I'd get it repaired. At least you know the history on the car and what work it needs. You could buy another one and the turbo explode a week later because it has not been properly maintained, then you will really be out of pocket.

Turbos don't last forever on any car. I had one go on an Audi that done less than 100k miles. If you don't want to have to replace it at some point, buy a car without one :)

It's hardly on it's last legs. Get a better quote because £1650 is too high. Should be able to get a reconditioned turbo fitted for less than £1k.

To be fair, this was AFTER I'd successfully done an engine swap for my (seized engine) Leon Cupra R, also on my driveway. After doing the engine swap, I realised that actually, most mechanical jobs were perfectly achievable myself.
 
I've managed to get a quote for £1640 which includes all labor, new turbo and new glow plugs and control unit. Might even haggle to get that £40 knocked off ;)
 
You knew what you needed to do really, you wouldn’t have posted here otherwise.

The advice on here is always: Better the devil you know unless you just want a new car because you want one :D
 
Still sounds like a lot to me to be fair. I had a quick look on ECP and Brembo discs and pads all round, + Bosch Glow Plugs come in at £222.90. I'm not exactly sure what control unit you are talking about though? Are you sure it's actually broken? When I did the glow plugs on my A3, I changed the glow plugs. End of. Nothing else needed changing, and it worked fine.

Adding on a recon turbo @ £500, that's still only ~£723 in parts. You shouldn't really be too much over £1000 all in for turbo, brakes & glow plugs assuming you're not getting totally ripped on the labour charge.
 
£600 should have one fully refurbed and fitted, had to do my own. In fact though, if your on 140k, chances are or your very lucky, its been changed already once.
 
140k is nothing, i bought my car 5 years ago with more than that on it and it's the most reliable car i've had.

The two worst cars for reliability have been the ones we bought with under 100k. They were French though.........

Nah, I disagree. My 330d's turbo went at 160,000 miles. It didn't have a particularly easy life either.
