EA Attempts Hostile Take-Two Takeover

EA distribute the hardcopys, so only deal with the printing, and distribution, publishers can exercise a degree of control but this is bound by strict contracts, valve will get a slice, as will EA, valve have all the control here though and in fact would probably not make a blind bit of difference to valve if ubisoft or activision were the publishers, EA wanted their name on that box as much as valve wanted a big publisher on it

Tend to agree with EA bashing being a bit old but whether or not those are examples of good games to come out recently is surely a matter of personal preference... :)

Of the two I'd say are 'okay' I'd still regard as disappointments.

Publishers (if PUBLISHING a title) have FULL control, not a degree of control. If they want the game changed, they can - because generally speaking, publishers will fund the whole game and own the IP.

Aye, but that could be said for any publisher.

whilst they have got better i do still have that lingering feeling that they dilute the full talent of a development house when they introduce their EA bureaucracy and, usually, unreasonable deadlines, this is where the quality reduction comes from now, not just EA going "make this title cos its cheap, easy, and muppets will buy it"

Again, this is a industry wide thing - not just an EA thing. It happens to 3rd-party developers as well as first party.

I find EA games rather expensive too :/

I hope they don't take Take-Two.

No they're not, they're bashing them because they seem to think when EA buys a company - they ruin them. Maybe 10 years ago (Westwood, Origin and Bullfrog come to mind), yes - but IMO, not anymore.

Besides, the industry is moving towards benefiting indy devs now anyway. With the likes of XBLA, WiiWare, PSN and Steam - there is no reason developers can't innovate and create great games by themselves. That's exactly what we're doing here at Frontier with LostWinds.

Well I'm bashing them partially because they are monopolising. We have nothing to gain from them owning even more of the games industry.

But ask yourself this; Why are EA so desperate to buy out Take-Two ?

Is it to make GTA IV better ? No, that's highly unlikely, even impossible.

Is is to make shed loads of cash ? Yes, and this is immoral (If Take Two were on the verge of bankruptcy, then maybe it would be ok), and anti-competitive (owning a fair few of the decent devs). EA are greedy, and will do whatever it takes to get even more money in their own pockets. That's all it's about, it's definitely not about making gamers happier.

I went to a video games conference in Swansea last year.

Loads of major and indy developers attended.

Indy teams talked about game engines, talked about the idea behind their games.

Guess what EA spokesperson did?

Played a 5 minute promo vid of EA games.

Says a lot tbh.

Valve also published the Orange Box on Steam. Think about it, if EA had full control of HL2 et al would they let people buy the game in a way that totally by-passed their boxes in store.

Didn't EA port the PS3 version, because Valve wanted nothing to do with it? Think that's the only work they did apart from distribution. There's no way Valve would give up any rights or control over the Half Life series.

John Riccitiello said:
Rockstar and its franchise Grand Theft Auto is the "primary interest" of EA's attempted purchase of Take Two games, said chief executive John Riccitiello.

*yawn* When's the EA hating going to stop? Almost as bad as the Star Wars Galaxies players who can't get over hating SOE.

I can't think of a franchise EA have ruined in a long time. Actually, let's list some cool EA games that came out recently:

Skate
Crysis
Fifa08
Burnout Paradise
Rock Band
The Orange Box

The list goes on, take your EA hating elsewhere, it's getting quite old.

its clear you havent been gaming very long

also EA only published Crysis and Orange Box

they dont own crytek or value (not yet anyway :()

EA bashing is more than justified

The Orange Box is not an EA game. FIFA08 was disappointing. I've been playing FIFA for years and it's obvious they just bang out a game (or two!) a year in a shameless profit-making exercise. I've never heard of Skate or Burnout Paradise, what are they like?

it has EA's name on it.

Not on mine it doesn't.

Valve are a bunch of MS fanboi's and couldn't be bothered figuring out how to code for the PS3 :p (coding for the PC and 360 is supposed to be very similar). Hence they outsourced PS3 dev to an EA studio, who had already learned to code for the PS3.

I've no problems with that (other than HL should never be ported to any console at all ;) ) as everyone seems to win out of it. Valve increase sales, EA get paid for developing it, PS3 owners get the Orange Box.

SAND by any chance?
